Volkswagen ID. New details about the GTI
Volkswagen introduced the ID at the IAA Motor Show. He shared more details about the GTI Concept model.
Kai Grünitz, leader of the company's R&D team, explained that the company has already developed a driveable prototype for this model and that the design of the fifth generation GTI is based on this project.
Grünitz said they wanted to design the car to be agile, with very precise responses and where you can feel the road surface. It will be fast, but also comfortable and have more power than the current ID 2 All model.
The interior of the vehicle has a fake engine sound inspired by previous GTI models, but drivers will be able to turn off this sound if they wish.
The production version is built on the MEB Entry platform and shares the basic chassis with the ID.2All model. However, it will have slightly smaller dimensions than the concept vehicle.
Volkswagen is determined to retain the GTX name used for its high-performance electric models. Design chief Andreas Mindt said, “GTX models will be targeted to specific segments and will be all-wheel drive models. This [concept] is front-wheel drive and will be called the GTI.”
Mindt furthermore, ID. He stated that the design of the GTI model was completed in just three months. ID. He said that since the design of the 2 has already been completed, the necessary tweaks have been made to make this vehicle's design fit the GTI style. The designer shared that his favorite feature is the wheels, inspired by the original GTI but made of aluminum.
