Volkswagen Passat B9: Is the sedan better without a body?

Volkswagen introduced the new generation of Passat. The model codenamed B9 will now only be offered with the station wagon body type. This means the end of the sedan body type.

Passat is one of the best-selling cars in Europe. The model, which has sold more than 30 million units, has become an indispensable vehicle for many people. However, the sedan body type is now losing popularity. Therefore, by taking this decision, Volkswagen aims to make Passat more competitive.

The new Passat uses the MQB Evo architecture. This architecture means a lighter and more efficient vehicle. The size of the Passat has also increased. The length has increased by 144 mm, the wheelbase has increased by 50 mm. This means more space in the cabin.

In terms of design, Passat opens a new page. Using a design language similar to the electric ID models, Passat interestingly resembles the ID.7 Variant.

Inside the cabin, a 12.9-inch touch screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel are offered as standard. Additionally, the gear lever has been moved to the steering column.

The engine options are quite diverse. Passat gets a mild hybrid unit for the first time in its history. The 1.5-liter eTSI engine will be able to produce 150 horsepower. The standard 2.0 TSI unit at the next level sends the 201 horsepower it produces to the front wheels. At the top of the family is the version of the same engine that produces 265 hp and offers 4Motion four-wheel drive support.

Today, there are still diesel options available for users looking for diesel. The new Passat will be on sale with three different power output options of the 2.0 TDI engine. While the versions that can produce 125 and 150 hp will offer front-wheel drive, the model that can produce 195 hp will be AWD.

The new Passat is the same zamIt will also have PHEV versions at the moment. The models, whose base version can produce 205 hp power and 350 Nm torque, use the 1.5 TSI engine. At the next level, there is a version that produces 270 hp of power and 400 Nm of torque. This will be the most powerful Passat money can buy.

PHEV models will come with a 6-speed DSG transmission and a 19.7 kWh battery. Volkswagen announced that this battery allows 100 km of fully electric driving.

Is the Passat better without the sedan body type?

The answer to this question will vary depending on the user. Sedan body type offers a more stylish and sporty appearance. However, the station wagon body type offers more space and practicality.

Volkswagen seems to have made the right decision by removing the sedan body type to make the Passat more competitive. The station wagon body style is a more popular option in Europe. This could help boost Passat's sales.
