Automatic transmission was the choice in automobile sales

When buying a car, price, fuel and engine type play an important role. The transmission type of the vehicle is also seen as an important factor in the preferences of car users. Interest in automatic transmission cars, which offer comfortable driving especially in heavy urban traffic, is increasing.

In the Turkish automotive market, sales of automatic transmission vehicles continued to rise in the January-March period of this year. It is stated that the increase in this increase is also due to the fact that the global production of automatic transmission cars is higher than that of manual transmission.

According to information compiled from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), Turkey's total car and light commercial vehicle market grew by 2023 percent in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period of 25,2, reaching 295 thousand 519 units.

During this period, car sales increased by 33,05 percent to 233 thousand 389 units, and light commercial vehicle sales increased by 2,6 percent to 62 thousand 130 units.

SHARES OF MANUAL CARS APPROACHED SINGLE DIGITS

As of the end of March, automatic transmission cars took an 208 percent share of sales with 441 thousand 89,3 units, while the share of manual transmission cars was 24 percent with 948 thousand 10,7 units. Thus, 10 out of every 9 cars sold in the said period were recorded as automatic transmission.

THE LOWEST SHARE IS IN THE C SEGMENT

When considered on a segment basis, the ultra-luxury segment (F), luxury segment (E) and upper-middle segment (D) had the highest automatic transmission share with 100 percent. These segments were followed by the A segment, known as the smallest city cars, with 97,4 percent, the B segment, known as the small vehicle class, with 94,8 percent, and the C segment, called the compact class or lower middle class, with 84,2 percent.

Based on car sales in March, automatic transmission sales exceeded manual transmission sales. Last month, 40 thousand 512 of the total 29 thousand 276 car sales were automatic transmission cars.

SHARES OF MANUAL CARS ARE AT THE LOWEST LEVEL IN RECENT YEARS

Considering the periods, the market share of manual transmission cars continued its decreasing trend.

In the January-March period of last year, the market share of automatic transmission cars was 73,2 percent and sales were 128 thousand 403 units, while the market share of manual transmission cars was 26,8 percent and sales were 47 thousand 18 units.

In the January-March period of 2022, the share of manual transmission cars in total sales will be 21,8 percent, in the same period of 2021 it will be 23,5 percent, in 2020 it will be 28,49 percent, in 2019 it will be 36,42 percent, in 2018 it will be 34,94 percent. It was recorded at 2017 percent in 41,13, 2016 percent in 45,87 and 2015 percent in 53,23.

In the 2006 report, which includes the first information on the ODMD website, the share of automatic transmission vehicle sales in all segments was recorded as 22 percent, and the share of manual transmission vehicle sales was recorded as 88 percent.
