Swedish Volvo is preparing to launch the EM90, an all-electric luxury minivan for the Chinese market. The move comes as part of Volvo's strategy to compete with Lexus models such as the LM and Buick GL8. The EM90, which is expected to be introduced at the beginning of next month, draws attention as Volvo's first multi-purpose vehicle.

The EM90's design was created based on the official teaser video and is inspired by Geely's Zeekr 009. Its wide and square body will be combined with Volvo's characteristic design features, and the front lights and grille in particular will be revised to give it a more traditional look.

The 2024 Volvo EM90 will feature two sliding doors and house an interior with a three-row seating arrangement. A two-row layout option with individual rear seats is also available in an ultra-luxury version. The MPV will be built on Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture platform and will aim to offer the interior "a Scandinavian living room feel in motion".

Volvo does not plan to offer the EM90 in the US and European markets. However, company officials state that they are also considering other markets outside of China. The EM90 looks set to breathe new life into the luxury minivan segment, as part of Volvo's strategy to expand its electric vehicle portfolio.
