August Horch, who became a partner of a car brand in Germany in his own name in 1904, later left the company after having problems with a senior employee. Although he wanted to establish a new company with the name of August Horch in 1909, he could not use this name because of the other company. Learning that the word "Audi" in Latin means "to listen", August Horch chose the word "Audi" as its brand name due to the similarity of the words Horch and Audi because the word Horch means "to hear" in German.

Audi was founded in 1910. By 1932 Audi; Horch merged with DKW and Wanderer companies to form Auto Union.
