Orchards are increasing in Karşıyaka, urban agriculture is getting stronger

Karşıyaka Municipality, which aims to strengthen the city against the climate crisis and its possible effects, the food crisis, and works to popularize urban agriculture, has brought another garden to the district.The first of the urban gardens was located in Örnekköy Construction Site Facilities, and the second was created in Zübeyde Hanım District. Karşıyaka Municipality continues its efforts to popularize urban agriculture within the scope of its effective fight against climate change and food crisis. With this understanding, Karşıyaka Municipality started to create gardens in the city, and after the Örnekköy Construction Site Facilities, it also brought a city garden to Zübeyde Hanım District. The aim is to provide seed support to the Şehit Muhittin and Ayşe Dudu Sağıroğlu Seed Center, which operates within the Municipality, and to identify varieties suitable for the climate of Karşıyaka, with the production in the orchards where various fruit and vegetable seeds are brought into the soil. In addition, the products grown in the orchards are sent to kindergartens to be used in the meals of children in kindergartens affiliated with Karşıyaka Municipality.

THERE ARE 65 FRUIT TREES AND 160 SHRUBS
Zübeyde Hanım Orchard, built on a total area of ​​7563 square meters, including 10 square meters of fruit garden, 942 square meters of garden area and walking paths, on 400/1635 street in Zübeyde Hanım District, has been a breath of fresh air for the residents of the neighborhood with the support it gives to urban agriculture. The area hosts a total of 65 fruit trees, including quince, walnut, apple of paradise, tangerine, pomegranate, jujube, pear, almond and apple varieties, and 160 edible shrub plants, including rosehip, black elderberry and aronia. In the garden area, there are winter broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and lettuce varieties. Periodic maintenance of fruit trees and other plants in the area, such as weeding, hoeing and fertilization, is carried out regularly.

PRODUCTION IS MADE IN TWO PERIODIES
The orchard area within the Örnekköy Construction Site consists of 37 parcels. Vegetable production is carried out in two periods, summer and winter, in the garden with a total area of ​​1170 square meters. During the winter period, celery, leek, white cabbage, red cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and lettuce varieties are grown. Cultivation is carried out in the garden using local seed sowing and seedling planting practices.

IT GROWS IN THE ORDER AND MAKES MEAL FOR THE LITTLE CHILDREN
Emphasizing that they will continue to work to popularize urban agriculture in Karşıyaka and raise awareness on this issue, Karşıyaka Municipality Agricultural Services Manager Yusuf Can Gökmen said, “We aim to make the city resilient against the food crisis that the world may face in the near future and to popularize urban agriculture. We consider the food issue from a higher scale, intersectionally and multidimensionally and plan it within the framework of our Karşıyaka Food Strategy Document, which you created as the first example on a district scale in Turkey. On the one hand, we share our local seeds with our citizens through our seed center, and on the other hand, we multiply our local seeds in our gardens within the scope of urban agriculture opportunities without using any pesticides or chemical fertilizers, and we distribute the products we produce to our kindergartens to be used in the meals of children registered in Karşıyaka Municipality kindergartens within the framework of the right to access healthy and fair food. we share.
