Tesla Recalls 1,6 Million Electric Vehicles in China

Tesla is recalling more than 1,6 million Model S,

According to The Guardian, Tesla's largest recall ever in China affects most of the cars it sells in the country.

China's state government agency responsible for market regulation announced the recall on Friday. In the statement of the institution, it was stated that Tesla in Beijing and Shanghai will use remote update systems to fix the problems, so vehicle owners will not need to visit Tesla service centers.

In December, Tesla recalled more than 2 million electric vehicles in the USA to improve its driver monitoring system.

The recall in China due to issues with the automatic steering assist function will apply to 1.6 million imported Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y. The notice stated that when the automatic steering function is activated, drivers may misuse the combined driving function and increase the risk of an accident.

The updates aim to ensure that drivers using the autopilot system pay more attention to the road. In documents submitted by Tesla to the US government, it was stated that the online software change will increase warnings to drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel.

In China, which is an important market and production center for Tesla, the company's CEO Elon Musk established close relations with Chinese officials, even as US-China relations deteriorated. In 2019, Tesla established an electric vehicle factory in Shanghai that assembles cars for China, Europe and other overseas markets.

Tesla is the number two seller in the developing Chinese electric vehicle market. Chinese automobile company BYD, which recently surpassed its US rival, has become the market leader.
