Mercedes-Benz shared the details of the facelift version of the G-Class model, which it plans to launch in 2024. This model will be offered with both electric and gasoline/diesel options and will have a more aerodynamic structure thanks to technologies taken from the EQG model.

Lessons learned from the EQG model

Mercedes-Benz introduced the electric G-Class concept, called EQG, at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year. This concept retained the iconic design of the G-Class and was equipped with an electric motor and battery pack. Additionally, some changes were made to improve aerodynamic performance. For example, the front grille was closed, the side mirrors were smaller and more streamlined, and the rims had a flatter structure.

Mercedes-Benz G GmbH General Manager Emmerich Schiller stated that the experiences gained during the development of the EQG model will also be used for the facelift G-Class model that will arrive in 2024. Schiller promised “a truly dramatic improvement in aerodynamics.” However, he added that these optimizations mean most people won't notice the changes even when they're around. These improvements will result in “tremendous reductions in fuel consumption”.zam It is expected to bring a decrease.

Electric and gasoline/diesel options

Mercedes-Benz will offer the facelifted G-Class model with both electric and gasoline/diesel options. The electric version will use the same engine and battery pack as the EQG model. This package consists of a 154 horsepower electric motor and a 54 kWh capacity battery. When fully charged, it offers a range of 400 km in the WLTP cycle. Jeep showed off a twin-engine Avenger 4×4 Concept, but it is not yet clear whether this concept will go into production.

The gasoline/diesel option will use the engines found in the current versions of the G-Class. The G550 model sold in the USA has a 416-liter V4 turbocharged gasoline engine with 8 horsepower. The AMG G63 model gets 577 horsepower from the same engine. In Europe and other markets, a more economical inline-six diesel option is available. In China, there is a four-cylinder gasoline model called G350.

A different design approach

Mercedes-Benz will also make some changes in the design of the facelifted G-Class model. These changes aim to improve aerodynamics, inspired by the EQG model. However, these changes will not be too radical and will not disrupt the characteristic features of the G-Class. At the front, there will be a closed grille, slim headlights and a flatter bumper. On the side, smaller and more streamlined side mirrors, flatter rims and less protruding fenders will be seen. At the rear, there will be LED taillights, dual exhaust outlets and a flatter trunk lid.

Mercedes-Benz will introduce and sell the facelifted G-Class model in the first half of 2024. This model will continue to be one of the brand's most iconic and most luxurious SUV models.
