Chinese automotive giant Chery gave up production in Turkey

The Chinese automotive giant has made its decision for investment. Having previously announced that the investment could also be made in Turkey, Chery changed its route to Spain. Thus, just like Volkswagen's planned factory to establish in Manisa, Chery chose a country other than Türkiye.

The Spanish government and Japanese manufacturer MESKEN Motors said they are close to an agreement to start car production in Spain, the first production facility of Chinese Chery Auto in Europe.

The Spanish Ministry of Industry said in a statement that Chery Auto is confident that an agreement to start production in Barcelona will be formalized in the coming days.

THEY HAD MEETINGS WITH MINISTRIES

EV Motors Barcelona spokesperson stated that the agreement emerged after the meeting between the Spanish delegation and Chery in China.

Chery announced last year that it had started negotiations with relevant ministries for production in Turkey.

Chery, which has not yet made a statement regarding the agreement, started selling cars in Spain at the beginning of 2024, in addition to being one of the few Chinese car manufacturers selling low-cost, mostly electric vehicles to Europe.

THEY WILL PRODUCE IN NISSAN'S FACTORY

According to the news in Reuters, Chery is aimed to produce vehicles in the factory that Japanese car manufacturer Nissan closed in 2021. It is claimed that if the agreement becomes official, some of the 600 jobs created by the closure of Nissan's factory will be regained.

The Spanish Ministry of Industry did not make a statement about whether Spain offered any public aid to Chery.

Meanwhile, world car giant Volkswagen had previously established a company to establish a factory in Manisa. However, the planned investment was not implemented.
