But Baldur's Gate 3 is a game that lets you talk to spiders and the dead, slip through cracks like a cloud of fog, reveal your invisible enemies by splashing booze, make a bargain with a devil, give an eye to a witch, and romance an amnesiac patient. A nun or a squid-faced telepath as you see fit has become the surprise hit of 2023.

The astonishing success was not a sure thing.
“I didn't think it would come at the price,” said Josh Sawyer, studio design director at rival Obsidian Entertainment and lead designer on Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. “I didn't think it would be a niche. But it was difficult for me to see a return on investment.”
Using the latest rules from Dungeons & Dragons, Baldur's Gate 3 employs turn-based combat, a rarity among big-budget contemporary video games.
