Toyota Hilux Became a Diesel-Electric Hybrid

Toyota is expanding its product range to increase its claim in the electric car market. The Japanese brand introduced the popular pickup model Hilux with a diesel-electric hybrid version. The new Toyota Hilux comes with a combination of a 48-liter turbodiesel engine equipped with a 2.8V system and a small electric motor.

Toyota Hilux is one of the best-selling pickup models in the world. Having reached sales of more than 1968 million units since 20, Hilux is preferred as a vehicle that can be used both in the city and off-road. Toyota takes an environmentally friendly approach in the new version of Hilux. Hilux provides advantages in both performance and fuel consumption with its diesel-electric hybrid system.

Hilux Provides Electrical Support to Its Diesel Engine

The hybrid version of Hilux uses a 203-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 500 hp and 2.8 Nm of torque. This engine is accompanied by a small electric motor that acts as a margin generator and is powered by a 7.6 kg lithium battery. The electric motor provides 12 kW (16 hp) power and 65 Nm torque support to the diesel engine when the battery is fully charged.

Some improvements have been made to Hilux's diesel engine. Thanks to the new two-arm belt tensioner, stronger belt material and improved start-stop system, the efficiency of the engine has been increased. Additionally, the engine is compatible with diesel fuel called HVO100, which is produced from renewable raw materials.

Hilux Does Not Compromise Its Performance

The hybrid version of Hilux has the same load carrying and towing capacity as the standard version. Hilux can carry 1 ton of cargo and tow 3,5 tons. Regarding fuel consumption, Toyota states that the 48V system provides 5 percent fuel savings. However, no official factory data has been shared yet.

The hybrid version of Hilux will only be offered with a double cabin body type. Visually, it will not differ from the standard version. In the interior, the 8-inch multimedia system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support attracts attention. In addition, Hilux offers remote control via a smartphone and is equipped with advanced driving assistant technologies within the scope of Toyota Safety Sense.

Toyota Hilux will be available in Europe in mid-2024 with its diesel-electric hybrid version. With this version, Toyota aims to increase its competitiveness in both the pickup market and the electric car market.
