Record Delay on German Railways

Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s symbol of railway transport, has recorded the worst performance in its history with its delay rates in long distance trains. The data released by the WB once again highlighted the deep problems in the country’s railway system.

Record Decline in October: 51.5 per cent Punctuality

In October, only 51.5 per cent of DB’s long-distance trains arrived at their scheduled arrival time less than 6 minutes late. This is an all-time low punctuality rate, below the company’s previous worst performance of 52 per cent in November 2023. This means that the travel plans of tens of millions of passengers are disrupted.

Main Causes of Poor Performance

WB management cited the poor state of the rail infrastructure and the intensive construction work required as the main reason for the record delays. Infrastructural deficiencies lead to congestion in train traffic, causing delays to spread rapidly across the network. In addition, external factors, such as switch and power line failures and storms, have a negative impact on punctuality. A DB spokesperson stated that the congestion had a negative impact on punctuality across the country.

Weekend Difference and Future Target

Analysing the daily data for October, it was observed that trains were more punctual on weekends. The difference in punctuality between weekdays and weekends reached 10-15 per cent; while the punctuality rates were 61.2 per cent and 62.9 per cent on 11-12 October, this rate dropped to 37 per cent on 23-24 October. According to the railway strategy, the target of 70 per cent punctuality for long-distance trains is set for 2029 at the earliest. This shows that the German railway system is in need of a radical overhaul.
