Mid Cornwall Metro Test Period Extended

The Mid Cornwall Metro project, which aims to transform Cornwall’s transport system, needs additional time during the test signalling phase. Network Rail has extended the temporary track closure between Newquay and Par until 18 November to fully test the safety of the system. This extension is critical to ensure that the new digital signalling system meets the highest safety standards.

Work in Progress and Safety Priorities

Network Rail is carrying out advanced works on the Newquay-Par railway line. This includes the upgrading of signalling and the addition of a second platform at Newquay. Engineers are currently carrying out extensive testing of digital systems that will increase the reliability and capacity of the route.

Bogdan Lupu, Network Rail Industry Programme Director, said that this upgrade was vital to ensure that all signals meet the highest safety standards. Lupu asked passengers to check the new timetables on GWR.com before setting off, as journey times may be longer than normal. Despite the temporary inconvenience, GWR and Network Rail emphasise that this work will result in a good outcome for residents and visitors to Cornwall, providing a fast, clean and reliable journey.

Expanding Regional Connectivity

GWR Station Manager Lee Goodson added that the completed Mid Cornwall Metro system will revolutionise regional transport. The project will facilitate hourly travel across the region and create new direct routes between Falmouth and Newquay via Truro, St Austell and St Austell/Par respectively.

Supported with funding from the UK Government and Cornwall Council, this project is a tangible example of how investment can help to make travelling by train more frequent, more accessible and more environmentally friendly. Once complete, Newquay will have two open platforms for the first time since 1987, which will significantly improve passenger flows and timetables.
