TransLink, Vancouver’s public transit agency, celebrated the 30th anniversary of the West Coast Express (WCE) route, the only commuter rail service in Western Canada, with significant achievements in innovation and sustainability. WCE, which connects downtown Vancouver to Mission City via eight main stations and operates Monday-Friday rush hour service, has both increased its capacity and significantly reduced its environmental footprint.
Modernisation and Service Expansion
West Coast Express has taken important steps to respond to increasing passenger demand and improve service quality:
Capacity Increase: in 2023, the fifth train was put into service in order to increase the capacity of the route.
Emission Reduction: Thanks to an approved modernisation programme started in the same year, emissions were reduced by P and the life of a locomotive was extended by 15 years.
Passenger Experience: Enhanced comfort systems and increased reliability have added value to the passenger experience and strengthened WCE’s reliability and performance in the region.
North American Leader in Renewable Diesel
The biggest achievement in the 30th anniversary of WCE came in the area of sustainability. By September 2024, TransLink has completed the transition of its entire fleet to renewable diesel. Thanks to this move, WCE has become one of the cleanest commuter rail networks in North America, with lower greenhouse gas emissions.
This important step is in full compliance with TransLink’s goal of achieving net zero fleet emissions status by 2050. Sustainability efforts are also supported by concrete data showing an increase of G in the utilisation of the fleet in 2023 compared to 2022.
All of these results demonstrate that investment, innovation and an unwavering commitment to the environment will preserve West Coast Express as a model of cleaner, smarter transport.
