The UN reported that natural disasters will displace 45 million people within countries in 2024

United Nations (UN) International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that natural disasters alone caused the displacement of 45 million people within the country and over $240 billion in losses in 2024.

The UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), held in Belem, the capital of Para State in northern Brazil, has begun.

In a report published by IOM as part of COP30, it called for attention to be drawn to the millions who live with the daily realities of floods, droughts, and disasters.

The report said, “People deserve the chance to stay safe, recover, and plan for the future when their homes and livelihoods are under threat. Natural disasters caused the displacement of 45 million people within the country and over $240 billion in damages just in 2024. Behind these figures are farmers whose homes were destroyed in floods and children who can no longer attend school.”

It was noted that IOM supports governments and local partners to help affected communities recover, rebuild, and prepare for the next storm.

“IOM HELPED MORE THAN 875,000 PEOPLE SURVIVE DISASTERS IN 2024 ALONE”

The report stated that among the expected key outcomes at COP30 are the adoption of the Global Adaptation Goal, which will establish clear targets to protect communities through early warning systems crucial for reducing climate-induced displacement, stronger livelihoods, and safe housing.
