Aebi Schmidt’s Snow Removal Machine Being Tested in Norway

Swiss company Aebi Schmidt is on the agenda with its new railway ballast compaction and snow removal machine Schmidt Beilhack HB 1100S, developed in cooperation with Austrian company PJM. the tough tests, which started in Norway in autumn 2024, evaluate the vehicle’s performance in difficult conditions on the Flåm Railway line’s U steep gradients and under heavy snowfall. Through these tests, engineers measure the machine’s efficiency, braking distances, noise levels and levelling capabilities to ensure compliance with European standards (TSI, EN and NNTR-NOR regulations).

Beilhack HB 1100S: Efficiency and Power

The Beilhack HB 1100S stands out as one of the most efficient snow removal machines on the market. Technical specifications are as follows:

  • Axle Configuration: Four axles.
  • Mass: 80 tonnes.
  • Power Output: 1.470 kW.
  • Snow Removal Capacity: Up to 10,000 tonnes per hour.

Thanks to its rotary system and snow suction system, this giant machine can perform superior performance even in heavy snow.

Part of Norwegian Infrastructure Investment

Bane NOR, Norway’s infrastructure manager, has purchased two of these snow-clearing machines from Aebi Schmidt to ensure uninterrupted train services during the winter months.

  1. The delivery of the first machine has been completed and is expected to enter service soon.
  2. Its analogue was built at the Beilhack production factory in Sankt Blasien, Germany. This factory has a long-established expertise, producing railway and wheeled snow removal machines since 1927.

With this sale, Aebi Schmidt further strengthens its role in the Northern European market. Once delivered, the machines are expected to provide critical support for Bane NOR to maintain train flow even in severe winter conditions and increase the region’s infrastructure resilience.
