Russian state company Rostec continues its modernisation activities in the field of aviation and defence without slowing down. In its latest press release, the company announced the completion of the second prototype of the Yak-130M training and light attack aircraft. While this second prototype is preparing to undergo extensive ground and flight tests, the assembly process of the third aircraft is proceeding in parallel.
“The Yak-130M was developed on the basis of analysis and consolidation of aviation experience in local and regional conflicts. The development of light combat aircraft based on combat training aircraft is in line with global trends in the development of military aviation.”
Increasing Combat Potential: Conversion from Yak-130 to Dual Role Aircraft
The Yak-130M, the first prototype of which has been completed in recent weeks, is being developed by Rostec’s subsidiary U.A.C. (United Aircraft Company) as part of an experimental design programme to increase the combat potential of the existing Yak-130 while retaining its full training functionality. The main objective of the modernisation is to transform the aircraft into a dual-role platform capable of advanced training and light combat operations.
The statements made by Rostec clearly reveal the scope of the modernisation:
“The modernisation will allow the Yak-130M to be equipped with air-to-air missiles and precision air-to-ground munitions guided by satellite and laser systems. The new aircraft will not only retain all its capabilities for training fighter pilots, but will also acquire the qualities of a combat aircraft.”
UAV Interception and Operational Versatility
In addition to increasing its combat capabilities, the Yak-130M is designed to successfully fulfil missions such as intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which is an increasing need in today’s conflict environments.
This new version, developed from the Yak-130, remains suitable for training pilots of fourth and fifth generation fighters, which is its main function. However, the modernisation aims to significantly increase the operational versatility of the aircraft and enable it to take an active role as a light attack aircraft in regional conflicts.
The completion of the second prototype represents an important milestone in the testing and certification process of this dual-role aircraft.
