First JAS 39 Gripen E Fighter Aircraft Delivered to Sweden

Sweden has passed an important milestone in its comprehensive modernisation programme to increase its airspace defence capability and national security. The first of the 60 JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jets to be produced by Saab was officially delivered to the Swedish Armed Forces at a ceremony held at F7 Såtenäs Air Base in the west of the country. The delivery ceremony was attended by representatives of the Swedish Ministry of Defence, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) and Saab.

Gripen E: Advanced Technology and Preparation for the Future Warfare Environment

In a statement on its official X account, the Swedish Armed Forces stated that this delivery is a milestone for the Air Force and significantly increases its airspace defence capabilities.

The Gripen E is equipped with features that represent the pinnacle of modern fighter jet technology. The aircraft has critical systems such as the modular mission computer developed by Saab, artificial intelligence-supported sensor fusion and AESA radar. These features enable threats to be detected much earlier, significantly reducing the pilot’s decision-making time and maximising the combat effectiveness of the aircraft.

In his speech at the ceremony, Skaraborg Squadron Commander Mattias Ottis said that this delivery marks the beginning of a new era in Swedish aviation history. Michael Claesson, Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, stressed that Gripen E is an important milestone in the development of Swedish defence and strengthens the national defence capability to counter future threats together with allies. Claesson stated that this success is the result of long-term co-operation between the Swedish Armed Forces, FMV and Swedish industry.

Software Flexibility and Artificial Intelligence Testing

Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson drew attention to the most critical features of the new generation fighter aircraft. Minister Jonson underlined the aircraft’s advanced sensor equipment as well as its software flexibility. The ability to update software on the aircraft within hours enables rapid innovation and immediate flexibility in the field.

In his social media post, Minister Jonson stated that Gripen E is a completely new and modern fighter aircraft in every aspect, and that the aircraft has advanced electronic warfare equipment. In addition, the information that artificial intelligence capabilities, which attracted great attention in the international arena, were tested on Gripen E, was an important indicator of how ready the aircraft is for the future warfare environment. Minister Jonson stated that, simultaneously with the entry into service of the Gripen E, work on the next generation of fighter jets is continuing, and that major investments in research are a guarantee of future success in the field of aviation.

This delivery is critical not only for strengthening Sweden’s air force, but also for consolidating its position as a technologically advanced player in the defence industry.
