SUV cars consolidate their place at the top

SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) cars, which can be used in different terrain conditions as well as asphalt, offer a strong range in terms of driving conditions.

These cars, which have large cabin and trunk volumes, are often preferred by large families.

SUVs, which are especially popular with high-ground and "muscular" car lovers, are also preferred by female drivers.

ONE OF EVERY TWO VEHICLES SOLD IS AN SUV

According to the data of the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), car sales increased by 2024 percent in the January-March 33,05 period compared to the same period last year, reaching 233 thousand 389.

The most preferred body type in the Turkish car market in the January-March period was SUV body type cars with a 51,7 percent share and 120 thousand 699 sales. Thus, one in every two vehicles sold in the automotive market was recorded as an SUV.

SUV cars were followed by sedans with 28,5 percent share and 66 thousand 451 sales, and hatchback cars with 18,1 percent share and 42 thousand 145 sales.

Other sales consisted of "MPV, CDV, sports and station wagon" body types.

SUV cars, which took the top spot from the sedan in January 2022, continued to be the most preferred body type in line with increasing interest and customer demand.

SUV CAR SALES IN THE LAST 5 YEARS

Looking at the first quarter data of the last 5 years in terms of body type in the automotive market, the share of sedan cars in the market in the first quarter of 2020 was 47,9 percent. During this period, almost one in every two vehicles sold was a sedan.

The share of SUV cars was recorded as 28,2 percent and the share of hatchback cars was 20,5 percent.

In the January-March period of 2021, the share of sedan cars was 40,7 percent, the share of SUV cars was 34,4 percent and the share of hatchback cars was 22,9 percent.

In 2022, the wind turned, and the share of SUV cars in the market surpassed sedan cars with 41 percent. The share of sedan cars was determined as 34,5 percent, and the share of hatchback cars was determined as 22,7 percent.

In the January-March period of last year, the share of SUV cars was recorded at 46,6 percent, the share of sedan cars was 29,9 percent and the share of hatchback cars was 21,3 percent.
