Opel The German automaker, a subsidiary of the French automaker Groupe PSA, since August 2017. Opel belonged to the American automaker General Motors from 1929 to 2017. Opel vehicles are sold in the UK under the Vauxhall brand. Some Opel vehicles are manufactured under the Holden brand in Australia and under the Buick brand in North America and China.

Opel was founded in Rüsselsheim in 1862 by Adam Opel as a sewing machine manufacturer. The company started producing bicycles in 1886 and produced its first car in 1899. General Motors acquired a majority stake in Opel after being listed on the stock exchange in 1929 and then took full control of the company in 1931. Thus, 90 years of control over the brand began.
In March 2017, Groupe PSA decided to buy Opel from General Motors for € 2,2 billion, making the French automaker the second largest automaker in Europe, after Volkswagen.
Opel headquarters are located in Rüsselsheim, in the German state of Hessen. The company designs, manufactures and distributes Opel branded passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and vehicle parts. Together with its British sister brand Vauxhall, they serve in over 60 countries around the world.
