Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the mandatory winter tire requirement will begin on November 15th and end on April 15th. Minister Uraloğlu said, “Thus, we have extended the mandatory winter tire requirement period from four months to five months. This requirement will be mandatory for all passenger and cargo vehicles on intercity roads. We also recommend that private vehicle owners install winter tires.”
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the “Communiqué on Amendments to the Communiqué on the Procedures and Principles Regarding the Obligation to Use Winter Tires” was published in the Official Gazette dated October 4, 2025 and entered into force.
Minister Uraloğlu stated, “We have changed the mandatory winter tire application dates. Due to seasonal conditions, we have updated the mandatory period, which began on December 1st and ended on April 1st, to November 15th–April 15th. Thus, we have extended the mandatory winter tire application period from four months to five months.”
Mandatory for all Passenger and Goods Carrying Vehicles
Minister Uraloğlu stated that winter tires increase road grip at temperatures below 7 degrees and said, “It is of vital importance in preventing accidents. The application will be mandatory for all passenger and cargo carrying vehicles on intercity roads. We also recommend that private vehicle owners install winter tires.”
Minister Uraloğlu noted that winter tire use within provincial borders is determined by the Governorships, saying, "Governorships may increase winter tire use within provincial borders by one month before and after the period determined by the Ministry. Therefore, it is crucial for our drivers to follow the announcements carefully. Those who do not comply with the rules will be fined 5,856 lira."
“Let's Travel with Equipment and Gear Suitable for Winter Conditions”
Providing information on the details of the winter tire application, Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that all tires on the axles of trucks, tractors, tankers and buses; all tires on pickup trucks, minibuses and cars; and tires that have to be replaced while driving must be winter tires. Reminding that studded tires that can only be used on icy surfaces are also winter tires, Uraloğlu said, “Having or using skid chains on the vehicle does not eliminate the necessity of winter tires; nevertheless, let’s ensure that our vehicles have the necessary equipment such as chains, chocks and tow ropes. Let’s not neglect to travel with equipment and gear suitable for winter conditions.”
