Traffic Accident Reduction Studies
Traffic accidents continue to be a serious problem today, and various studies are being carried out without slowing down to prevent these accidents. In recent years, a new one has been added to the research conducted on driving safety. According to a new study conducted by scientists, an additional green light system that can be used in vehicles has the potential to significantly reduce the risk of accidents.
A New Approach to Security
According to the news in TGRT News, brake lights were only ever placed at the rear of vehicles. However, experts from Graz University of Technology suggest that green brake lights at the front of vehicles could make a big difference, especially at intersections and in side traffic. Because many accidents occur when drivers make decisions without understanding whether the oncoming vehicle has stopped or not, and this can result in collisions.
Advantages of Front Brake Lights
Preliminary studies and research examining more than 200 traffic accidents have shown that front brake lights help drivers react more quickly and that sudden maneuvers are performed more safely. Especially when the green light is on in front of an oncoming vehicle, this is perceived as a "braking" message and other drivers position themselves accordingly.
Potential to Reduce Accident Risk
The experts who conducted the study conducted experiments on many different colors for the application. According to the results, it was agreed that green was a more suitable option. Although red front brake lights were initially considered, it was observed in tests conducted in the society that green was perceived more easily and naturally. Because green means “continue” in traffic psychology, in this case it also reflects the message “the vehicle has stopped and will start moving again”. This situation significantly reduces confusion.
Future Prospects
The study is still in the technical stage and its possible effects on traffic flow are being evaluated. The green light application, which car manufacturers are showing great interest in, is expected to be valid for all newly produced cars in the near future. It is also thought that governments may make this application a mandatory traffic rule in the coming years.
