Competition and Slowdown in China Negatively Affect BMW's Sales

BMW Group's First Quarter Sales Report

BMW Group has shared its sales figures for the first quarter of 2023 with the public. According to these data, BMW Group's vehicle sales decreased by 1,4% in the January-March period compared to the same period last year, falling to a total of 586.149 units.

The German automaker’s electric vehicle sales increased significantly during this period. Sales of electric vehicles reached 28,5 units, up 157.495% compared to the same quarter last year. This highlights the BMW Group’s commitment to electric mobility and the growth potential in this area.

In the same period, BMW vehicle sales fell by 2% to 520.142 units. Sales in the company's home base in Germany fell slightly by 1,3% to 61.264 vehicles.

In the Americas, the BMW Group achieved growth of 5,4%, reaching a total of 114.313 vehicle sales. 94.591 of these came from the US market alone. These positive results demonstrate BMW's strong performance in the North American market.

On the other hand, vehicle deliveries in China (including the Mini brand), the BMW Group’s largest market, experienced a noticeable decline. Vehicle deliveries in China decreased by 17,2% to 155.195 units. This is considered to be a reflection of consumers’ reluctance to spend, particularly due to global trade wars and economic uncertainties. This negative situation is not only affecting the BMW Group, but also the sales of German luxury car manufacturers Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen Group in China.
