Scientists' Sleep Recommendations for Healthy Aging
Scientists conducted a study to determine the amount of sleep needed for ‘healthy aging’. In this study, the sleep habits of approximately 45 participants aged 3,500 and above were recorded in detail in 2011, 2013 and 2015. After the study, the data of these individuals who underwent a health check-up five years later were meticulously analyzed by a team from Wenzhou Medical University in China. The results revealed that people who slept at least seven hours a night lived healthier lives in later life.
Participants were divided into five different groups based on their sleep habits over four years:
- Long-Term Sleep: 8-9 hours of regular sleep
- Normal Sleep Duration: 7-8 hours of regular sleep
- Short Sleep Period: Sleep falling below 8, while the average is above 8
- Increased Sleep Duration: Average sleep time from below 6 to above 8
- Short-Term Nap: Regularly get 5-6 hours of sleep
When the research results were examined, it was determined that individuals who slept at least 7 hours a day had a healthier aging process compared to other groups.
In their article, the researchers describe healthy aging as; be free from chronic diseases, no physical disorder, good mental health ve to actively participate in life defined as.
