South Korea Fined Meta $15 Million

South Korea has ordered social media platform owner Meta to pay a $15 million fine for collecting sensitive user data and selling it to advertisers without a legal basis.

Nearly 1 Million Users Affected

The US-based tech giant collected sensitive information such as religion, political views and sexuality of around 980.000 South Korean Facebook users and did not obtain the users' consent to obtain the information, the Personal Information Protection Commission said in a statement.

The agency said the information was later used by around 4.000 advertisers.

User Behavior Data Sold

The Commission found that Meta analysed behavioural data on Facebook, such as the pages users liked and the ads they clicked on, and created and managed advertising themes based on sensitive information associated with this data.

Additionally, the agency detailed the ways Meta uses this information, dividing its users into various categories.

The commission also highlighted that Meta unfairly denied users' requests for access to personal information and failed to prevent the data of around 10 South Korean users from being leaked by hackers.
