Meta has announced a series of new updates to help kids navigate Instagram more safely. According to Bloomberg, To prevent users from providing false information about their age, the company has developed an “adult classifier” AI tool that will examine user profiles to analyze their followers, content, and the types of content they engage with.
Separation of Accounts into Two Categories
Thanks to this developed system, Instagram accounts will be divided into two main categories: over 18 and under 18. Accounts under the age of 18, It will be transformed into an “Instagram teen account” with various security measures and content restrictions aimed at protecting children from online harm.
Age Determination and User Consent
Meta did not provide information on the accuracy of this AI in determining people’s ages, nor did it say whether users would have the right to object. Users will be able to verify their real age by uploading government-issued ID documents to the platform or by posting a video selfie to confirm their identity.
Background on New Features
These new security features come on the heels of a lawsuit filed by 33 attorneys general accusing Meta of using features that could negatively impact the mental or physical health of underage users. This is seen as an important step for the company to improve the safety of children.
