Meta has released a number of new updates to ensure kids have a safer experience on the Instagram platform. According to Bloomberg, The company has developed an AI tool called an “adult classifier” to detect users who provide false information about their age and automatically move them to a restricted account.
This AI tool will analyze user profiles, examine their followers, their content, and the types of content they engage with, allowing it to more accurately determine the age group of users.
ACCOUNTS WILL BE SPLIT INTO TWO
- Accounts will be divided into two categories: over 18 and under 18.
IT WILL TURN INTO A YOUNG ACCOUNT
Accounts of users identified as under 18 will be converted to an Instagram teen account, which comes with a variety of security and content restrictions aimed at protecting children from online harm. This change will allow young users to interact in a safer environment.
Meta did not provide any information about the accuracy of the AI tool in determining people’s ages. It also did not provide any information about the process for users to appeal. Users will be able to verify their real age by uploading government-issued ID documents to the platform or by posting a video selfie to verify their identity.
The new features come after a lawsuit filed by 33 attorneys general accused Meta of using designs that could harm the mental or physical health of minors, a move seen as part of the company’s efforts to prioritize child safety.
