Alan Turing’s painting created by an AI-powered robot has sold for $1,08 million at auction, marking a major milestone at the intersection of artificial intelligence and art.
The Construction Process
According to AFP, Ai-Da, named after Ada Lovelace, the world's first computer programmer, suggested painting a portrait of Turing during a verbal exchange with her creators, during a discussion on the theme of "AI for good". This suggestion is an interesting example of how AI can be used as a form of artistic expression.
Based on a drawing by Turing, the robot selected elements such as style, color, content, tone and texture before creating the artwork. This stage demonstrates how AI can be integrated into the artistic creative process.
Ai-Da could only paint on a relatively small canvas using a robotic hand, and the final image was enlarged using a printer. This process stands out as an approach that pushes the boundaries of artificial intelligence and explores new dimensions of artistic creation.
Sotheby's, which put Alan Turing's portrait up for auction on Friday, had estimated it would fetch up to $180.000. But bidding unexpectedly soared, with one anonymous buyer offering more than $1 million for the work. The painting received a total of 27 bids at the auction in New York.
The record-breaking sale of this humanoid robot-created artwork has sparked widespread discussions on the impact of AI on art and the creative process. Alan Turing’s AI-generated painting is not just a work of art, but also a symbol of the fusion of technology and art.
