Google Account Deletion App and User Security

Millions of Gmail users are at risk of having their accounts deleted as Google changes its policies regarding inactive user accounts. In three weeks, all Gmail accounts that have not been used for more than two years will begin to be deleted. Additionally, recently inactive Google Drive, Docs, Calendar, Meet, and Google Photos accounts will be permanently closed along with all their content.

Why Did Google Decide to Delete Accounts?

Google says this change is necessary to reduce the likelihood of inactive accounts being hijacked by malicious actors and used for spam or other harmful content. Deleting such accounts is intended to improve user safety and protect the overall health of the platform.

What Should You Do to Prevent Your Account from Being Deleted?

The first step you should take to prevent your account from being deleted is to send at least one email from your Gmail account every two years. Google considers this simple action as active use, and thus you secure your account. In addition:

  • Show that your account is active by using Google services. For example, simple actions like sending an email via Gmail, sharing a photo on Google Photos, or watching a video on YouTube will help.
  • Staying active online using Google Search is another practical way to ensure the security of your account.

This deletion was first announced in May and was implemented on accounts that were created specifically to access free trials but were not used afterward.

Important Notice to “Google Photos” Users

If you store your photos in Google Photos, you will need to sign in to that service separately to prevent your photos from being permanently deleted. Users with active subscriptions to news feeds or various apps through their Gmail accounts will not be affected by this deletion.
