Hafize Gaye Erkan was born in Istanbul in 1982. Erkan, whose father is a mechanical engineer and whose mother is a mathematics teacher, graduated from Istanbul Boys' High School. After graduating from Boğaziçi University, Department of Industrial Engineering, she went to the USA. She earned a doctorate in operations research and financial engineering from Princeton University. She studied management sciences at Harvard Business School and leadership at Stanford University.

Hafize Gaye Erkan started working at Goldman Sachs in 2005. Here, he provided consultancy to the largest banks and insurance companies in the USA for 9 years. He moved to First Republic Bank in 2014. There, he held various roles, including co-chief executive officer, president, board member, investment director, deposit director and co-director of risk. She also served on the boards of jewelery company Tiffany & Co and financial consultancy Marsh McLennan.
