Rishi Sunak was born in London on 12 May 1980. His father was a doctor and his mother was a pharmacist. His family immigrated from the Indian state of Punjab. Sunak was educated at Winchester College. Later, he graduated from the Department of Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University. He earned a master's degree in business administration from Stanford University.
Sunak worked as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs between 2001 and 2004. He later became the managing partner of a hedge fund he founded called Theleme Partners. He married Akshata Murthy in 2009. Murthy was the daughter of Narayana Murthy, one of India's richest businessmen.
Sunak was elected MP for Richmond (Yorks) from the Conservative Party in 2015. He served in various committees in the parliament. He was appointed chief secretary at the Ministry of Treasury in July 2019. He became Chancellor of the Treasury in February 2020.
