İlber Ortaylı was born on May 21, 1947 in Bregenz, Austria. He comes from a Crimean Tatar family. His mother is Şefika Hanım and his father is Kemal Ortaylı. His father, II. He completed his undergraduate education at Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, Department of History in 1970. He resigned from his post in 1982 in response to political sanctions imposed on universities. During this period, he gave lectures, seminars and conferences in Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Princeton, Moscow, Rome, Munich, Strasbourg, Ioannina, Sofia, Kiel, Cambridge, Oxford and Tunisia. He returned to Turkey in 1989 and became a professor and served as the head of the Department of Administrative History at Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences, between 1989 and 2002. In 2002, he moved to Galatasaray University and two years later to Bilkent University as a guest lecturer. He taught Turkish Legal History at Galatasaray University Faculty of Law and MEF University Faculty of Law. He also served as a member of the Galatasaray University senate.
