Birth and family of İlber Ortaylı
İlber Ortaylı was born on May 21, 1947 in Bregenz, Austria. He comes from a Crimean Tatar family. His mother is Şefika Hanım and his father is Kemal Ortaylı. His father, II. He was one of the Crimean Tatars who went to work in Germany during World War II. His mother worked as a nurse in a hospital in Austria. He immigrated to Turkey with his family in 1949.
İlber Ortaylı's education and academic career
İlber Ortaylı completed his primary and secondary education at Istanbul Austrian High School. He learned German here. He graduated from Ankara Atatürk High School in 1965. He completed his undergraduate education at Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, Department of History in 1970. Here he became a student of famous teachers such as Şerif Mardin, Halil İnalcık, Mümtaz Soysal, Seha Meray, İlhan Tekeli, Mübeccel Kıray. In addition, there were names such as Zafer Toprak, Mehmet Ali Kılıçbay, Ümit Arslan among his classmates.
After his undergraduate education, he studied Slavic and Eastern European languages at the University of Vienna. He did his master's degree with Halil İnalcık at the University of Chicago. He became a doctor at Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences in 1974 with his thesis titled 'Local Administrations After the Tanzimat' and became an associate professor at the same faculty in 1979 with his study titled 'German Influence in the Ottoman Empire'.
He resigned from his post in 1982 in response to political sanctions imposed on universities. During this period, he gave lectures, seminars and conferences in Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Princeton, Moscow, Rome, Munich, Strasbourg, Ioannina, Sofia, Kiel, Cambridge, Oxford and Tunisia. He returned to Turkey in 1989 and became a professor and served as the head of the Department of Administrative History at Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences, between 1989 and 2002. In 2002, he moved to Galatasaray University and two years later to Bilkent University as a guest lecturer. He taught Turkish Legal History at Galatasaray University Faculty of Law and MEF University Faculty of Law. He also served as a member of the Galatasaray University senate.
