Automotive Industry Association (OSD) announced the production and export numbers and market data for the January-May period of 2023. Accordingly, in the first 5 months of the year, total automotive production increased by 20 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 616 thousand 342 units. Automobile production, on the other hand, increased by 30 percent to 386 thousand 427 units. Together with the tractor production, the total production reached 642 thousand 82 units. In the first five months of the year, commercial vehicle production increased by 6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. In this period, while the production in the heavy commercial vehicle group increased by 28 percent, the production in the light commercial vehicle group increased by 3 percent. During this period, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 75 percent. On the basis of vehicle group, the capacity utilization rates were 75 percent in light vehicles (cars + light commercial vehicles), 92 percent in the truck group, 48 percent in the bus-midibus group and 81 percent in the tractor.

Exports increased by 16 percent and reached 14,6 billion dollars

In the first five months of the year, automotive exports increased by 9 percent on unit basis compared to the same period of the previous year, and amounted to 415 thousand 276 units. In this period, automobile exports increased by 22 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, while commercial vehicle exports decreased by 8 percent. Tractor exports, on the other hand, increased by 2022 percent compared to the same period of 18 and amounted to 8 thousand 590 units. According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly, the total automotive industry exports maintained its top position in the sectoral export ranking with 2023 percent in the first five months of 14. According to Uludag Exporters' Association (UIB) data, total automotive exports in the first five months increased by 2022 percent compared to the same period of 16 and reached 14,6 billion dollars. In euro terms, it increased by 18 percent to 13,6 billion euros. In this period, exports of the main industry increased by 18 percent in dollar terms, while exports of the supply industry increased by 14 percent.

The five-month increase in the market reached 60 percent

In the first five months of 2023, the total market increased by 60 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 466 thousand 379 units. In this period, the automobile market also increased by 59 percent and reached 340 thousand 37 units. Looking at the commercial vehicle market, in the first five months of the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, the total commercial vehicle market grew by 65 percent, the heavy commercial vehicle market by 56 percent, and the light commercial vehicle market by 66 percent. In the January-May period of 2023, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales was 34 percent, and the share of domestic vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 54 percent, compared to the same period of the previous year.
