Volkswagen has announced that it does not plan to develop an internal combustion engine for the Golf model. 'If the world changes by 2027 we can design a new vehicle, but I don't think so,' CEO Thomas Schaefer said.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer stated in an interview with the German automobile magazine Automobilwoche that the German manufacturer does not plan to develop a new generation internal combustion engine for the Golf model, which has been on sale since 1974.

Stating that the next generation Golf is planned for 10 years, Schaefer said, “Then we need to see how this segment develops. If the world develops in a completely different way from expectations by 2026 or 2027, we can develop an entirely new tool. But I don't think it will. So far this is not expected.” made its assessment.

'Models will continue on their way electrically'

Stating that the Golf name will be preserved for an electric model of Volkswagen, Schaefer said, "It is clear that we will not give up iconic names such as Golf, Tiguan and GTI, we will transfer them to the world of electric cars."

Golf 8, which is in production after Volkswagen's decision not to invest in renewing the engine of Europe's best selling car, Golf, will be the last internal combustion engine version of the hatchback car.

Meanwhile, the Volkswagen brand plans to launch 2026 new electric models by 25, including an entry-level model that the automaker wants to sell for less than 10 euros.
