Citroën designers planned every element of oli to be multifunctional, reducing weight and complexity by using fewer or integrated parts, using recycled or recyclable materials wherever possible.

Versatile platform

While the hood, trunk, and roof of a traditional car may seem like the perfect platform for helping with household chores like tree pruning, few vehicles are actually built with this capability in mind. In oli, the situation is different. The flat hood, roof and rear side panels were chosen to meet the goals of low weight, high strength and maximum durability as well as creating the vehicle's unique silhouette.

Panels made from recycled corrugated board, which is converted into a honeycomb sandwich structure between fiberglass reinforcement panels, were developed together with BASF. Covered with a hard and textured Elastocoat® protective layer, usually used in parking lots or loading ramps, Elastoflex® was coated with Polyurethane resin and painted with water-based BASF RM Agilis® paint. The panels are very rigid, light and strong. It's durable enough for an adult to stand on and 50 percent lighter than an equivalent steel ceiling construction.

The ceiling can serve different uses, from using it as a ladder to mounting a tent on a platform. Convenience is provided without the added weight or cost of exotic materials. Load-carrying versatility is also uncompromised. Roof bars on both sides of the roof panel offer the possibility of fixing accessories such as bike carriers and roof racks. Under the hood are storage spaces, including compartments for personal and emergency items, apart from charging cables.

Horizontal and vertical meet

The Citroën team used the contrast of vertical and horizontal design elements in the glass and lighting details to create flat surfaces due to source, material targets. Thanks to the vertical design of the windshield, the least amount of glass is used. This solution reduces weight and complexity. Apart from that, it helps protect passengers from the effects of the sun. What's more, oli's modest air conditioning system is estimated to help reduce energy requirements by up to 17%.

The Oli has an experimental "Aero Channel" system between the front of the hood and the flat top panel. This system blows air against the glass and creates a curtain effect to soften the airflow over the ceiling. The windshield frame is finished with a glossy infrared coating. Citroën will use this new color in conjunction with its new brand identity.

The contrast between horizontal and vertical is also visible in the side panels and glass. The front doors continue the Ami example. Even though they are mounted differently, both sides are the same. They are lighter, but still sturdy. It is also much easier to manufacture and assemble. They save 20 percent in weight compared to a family hatchback. Half the number of components is sufficient and with the removal of the loudspeaker, soundproofing and electrical wiring, approximately 1,7 kg is saved per door.

The exterior door panel is easier to install and maximizes interior storage space. Graceful curves flow upwards along the sides of the vehicle and run up the roof, above the side window. Large, horizontal windows tilt slightly towards the ground to help reduce the effects of the sun. Manual, easy-to-use “fold-up” pantograph opening sections similar to those on the Ami provide fresh air to the interior.

The narrower rear doors are hinged from the rear of the vehicle and use vertical glass to provide more light and visibility to the rear passengers. The shape change between the front and rear doors also offered the opportunity to add a passive air intake that provides ventilation for the rear seat passengers. Wide doors facilitate cabin access.

The front and rear lighting modules are also quite plain. But it does apply the contrast between two highly original horizontal lines and a vertical section. This application will be further developed as a distinctive Citroën lighting signature in future series production vehicles.

Innovative luggage

Instead of the usual trunk or hatchback, Oli offers an unexpected, inspiring solution in product design. Whether it's to carry disassembled furniture to the house or for the weekend, a board or roof tent to the beach offers functionality that meets all requirements. The individual rear head restraints fold towards the roof and the rear window opens upwards. This extends the length of the 994 mm wide removable flat load platform from 679 mm to 1050 mm.

Versatility and ease of installation are standard. The tailgate folds down and when the loading platform is removed, a height of up to 582 mm is created between the vehicle floor and the rear window. With the panel in place, there is a handy and secure luggage area with a height of 330mm underneath. The removable load platform is light and flat. It's also made from the same recycled material as the hood and roof panels.

Smart slides on both sides of the floor offer the possibility to attach hooks or accessories. In addition, there are additional secure storage areas on the side walls. The lean-designed tailgate consists of two parts. It features a steel panel with a central plate recess. There is one more section on it. Tire life up to 500.000 kilometers

One of the key elements in maximizing the use of sustainable materials, increasing durability and reducing costs is wheels and tires. The 20-inch wheel and tire combination used in the oli offers a high level of efficiency. The tires were developed in conjunction with Goodyear. The project also showcases a new hybrid wheel prototype design.

All-aluminum wheels are expensive and energy-intensive to manufacture. Steel wheels are heavy. Therefore, it was decided to combine the two. The resulting hybrid wheels are 15 percent lighter than an equivalent steel wheel and contribute to a 6 kg reduction in overall vehicle weight. There are also significant design gains. Citroën has partnered with Goodyear to use the Eagle GO concept tire. It combines sustainability with longevity and smart technology to monitor the condition and condition of the tyre. Apart from sunflower oils and rice husk ash silica, the tread compound is made from sustainable or recycled materials, including pine tree resins and full natural rubber, which replaces synthetic, petroleum-based rubber.

Goodyear has set an ambitious target of achieving a lifespan of up to 11 km for the Eagle GO concept tire, thanks to the sustainable reuse of the carcass and the ability to renew the 500.000 mm tread depth twice over the tire's lifetime. Even oli's strong white BASF RM Agilis® water-based paint is eco-active with low levels of volatile organic compounds (below 250g/lt).

The concept of interior design is reshaped

The designers preferred to be extraordinary while creating the interior. With larger screens, longer armrests, large surface panels, and more comfortable seats, the cabins of the vehicles shine like stars. But these choices mean weight and cost.

Instead of an extensive dashboard with multiple displays and hidden computers, the oli features a single symmetrical beam that runs across the width of the vehicle. The steering column and the wheel are fixed on one side. In the middle is a smartphone dock and five switch-type switches for the air conditioning system. Oli has only 34 pieces in this field. Whereas, a similar family-type compact hatchback uses about 75 parts on the front and center console.

The beam has an electric rail on which accessories can be attached via sliding USB sockets. This is ideal for powering appliances or plugging in the coffee machine while you wait for the kids to leave school. Two ventilation ducts, one in front of the driver and passenger, allow the use of a smaller air conditioning unit to further increase efficiency and reduce weight.

Behind and under the beam is a shelf made of BASF Elastollan®. The bright orange, recyclable 3D-printed Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) storage rack features flexible corks that hold objects like coffee cups or soft drink cans in place.

All infotainment and communication functions in the Oli are accessed via the smartphone inserted into the slot on the beam. Once the connection is established, phone information and apps are combined with essential vehicle data such as speed and charge level. Information is displayed by the 'Smart Band' system, which projects across the width of the windshield's lower frame.

The same approach is used for the in-car audio system. Cylindrical bluetooth speakers can be placed here to provide quality sound for listening to music on the go. By simply eliminating the usual sound system, 250g of weight was saved. Speakers can be removed. Thus, the enjoyment of music can continue wherever it is parked. Speakers can be hung on rails outside the vehicle. This means the enjoyment of the music continues uninterrupted whether you're dining outdoors or partying on the beach.

Looking for various solutions for HMI use, Citroën engineers came up with the unusual idea of ​​using a professional modular gamepad joystick to mount on the steering wheel of oli. The vehicle has a rotating gear selector on the steering column for automatic transmission control. Along with the integrated "start stop" button, smaller levers operate the vehicle's headlights and signals.

Space efficiency

Instead of bulky seats that block the light and fill the cabin, space-saving seats are used in oli. These use 80% fewer parts than an equivalent SUV seat. The bright orange front seats are made of strong tubular frames. These are fitted with cushions completely covered with recycled polyester fabric. Of course, the seats are also fully recyclable.

The innovative 3D-printed mesh backrests feature an integrated headrest and are inspired by modern office furniture. Thin but extremely supportive seats are comfortable and firm just where they need to be. Products produced in conjunction with BASF are made from lightweight, fully recyclable Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU). They are covered with an orange material to make them look and feel attractive. Mesh backrests contribute to the comfort and convenience of passengers by enhancing the sense of space and light inside the vehicle.

Rear seat passengers can use the exposed tubular frame of the backrest to mount accessories. For example, a small USB powered tablet, bag hanging hooks, cup holder, magazine holder net or a small tray for kids to enjoy snacks make life in the cabin easier.

In keeping with Citroën's promise of comfort, the front seats are secured to the floor with recyclable TPU isolation rings that absorb road imperfections and vibrations and reflect the brand's “Progressive Hydraulic Cushions” technology. The comfortable individual rear seats are made from similar materials and the backrests fold down to expand the luggage compartment. Round ceiling-mounted TPU headrests hover above each backrest and fold up towards the ceiling when needed.

On either side of the vehicle is a hidden storage compartment for the first aid kit, which can be accessed under the rear seats and with the rear doors open. A storage console fills the space between the individual rear seats. The orange, recyclable soft 3D-printed TPU construction has flexible 'mushrooms' to keep items stable. BASF TPU parts used indoors can be recycled in bulk. This is a good step towards sustainable mono-material as an element of the Life Cycle Assessment.

The doors are free of complex and heavy door panels containing switches, armrests, speakers and window operators. Instead, oli's lean panels maximize storage while providing comfort and easy on-off.

The floor that increases usability

Instead of hard-to-clean carpet, oli has an Advanced Thermoplastic Polyurethane (E-TPU) floor covering developed with BASF. As flexible as foam rubber but lighter. Extremely flexible and highly abrasion resistant. The floor covering can be changed if a new color is desired.
