All-Electric Citroen Oli Offers a Enjoyable Approach to Individual Mobility

Acting with the motto of accessible electric mobility for everyone, Citroën aims to continue its success with Ami with oli. Together with oli, Citroën builds on the innovative Ami to make transportation fun, affordable, environmentally responsible and versatile. With its reduced weight and improved structure, oli was designed using recycled and recyclable materials. Aiming for the “best in class” Life Cycle Assessment for its accessibility, durability and longevity, oli aims to achieve the 400 kg weight target for a range of 1000 km. Average consumption of 10 kWh/100 km, maximum speed of 110 km/h and charging from 23% to 20% in approximately 80 minutes puts oli in a completely different place in the electric vehicle world.

Citroën reveals its vision of being the leading brand of affordable personal transportation of the future with its new models. Ami's success provides the impetus for the new oli. The innovative Ami demonstrates the courage to do things differently to fulfill Citroën's commitment to making all-electric transportation available to everyone. The brand is redefining industry trends for heavier, more complex and expensive electric cars with oli, a stunning and innovative “wheel lab” for family transportation.

Citroën CEO Vincent Cobée commented, “We named this project 'oli' as a greeting to Ami. Because it sums up what the tool is aiming for very well. "It's further proof that Citroën can offer all-electric mobility to all people in unusual, responsible and rewarding ways." Why Vincent Cobée is right for oli zamHe explained that it was a moment with the following words, “There are three conflicts in society at the same time. First, the value of mobility and dependence on mobility. Second, economic constraints and resource uncertainty. Third, the growing desire for a responsible and good future. Consumers can feel that the era of abundance is coming to an end. Stricter regulations and rising costs limit our freedom of action. Also, the growing awareness of the need to accelerate efforts to prevent climate change makes us more environmentally conscious and understanding.” Cobée continued, “In the mid-70s, the average family car weighed around 800kg, 3,7m long and 1,6m. had width. Today's equivalent cars are at least 4,3 m long and 1,8 m wide and weigh 1200 kg. Some reach 2500 kg. This increase is partly due to legal and security requirements. But if the trend continues and we continue to keep 95% of these vehicles parked every day and single-person travels 80% of the time, the conflict between the need to protect our planet and the promise of future sustainable, electrified transportation will not be easy to resolve. Citroën believes that the transition to electric should not be an imposition, that being sensitive to the environment should not restrict transportation and that life by car should not become a form of punishment. We need to reverse trends by making vehicles lighter and cheaper and find creative ways to maximize usage. Otherwise, families may not have access to the freedom of transport as all-electric vehicles become the only possible option. oli is an optimistic solution to this contradiction that Citroën has presented,” he said.

An innovative approach to future family transportation

Citroën is trying to 'stop' to the trend of exaggeration and expense, and instead try the same, lighter, less complex and truly affordable zamfocus on creating creative and clean tools at the same time zamHe believes his time has come. Electric powered and all-electric models such as the ë-C4 and the new ë-C4-X or ë-Berlingo and ë-SpaceTourer provide access to the comfort, character and electric-drive benefits consumers have come to expect from Citroën, while the extraordinary Ami was an important move in that direction.

With oli, Citroën demonstrates an innovative approach to future family transportation. The brand rethinks every detail to reduce resources and materials to make vehicles with decent driving range, enhanced versatility and affordable purchase.

Goal: Best lifecycle assessment

Oli stands out as a family vehicle that prioritizes sustainability. The vehicle demonstrates the best-in-class Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for optimum use of lightweight and recycled materials, sustainable manufacturing processes, durability for long service life and end-of-life recycling.

By cleverly reducing the number of parts and components, using the lightest and most responsible materials, complexity is minimised, while increasing versatility and functionality. Thus, it is extremely attractive in terms of design and usability, zamAt the same time, a much more efficient, very affordable and less complex car emerges.

Attention to detail is evident everywhere. For example, armchairs draw attention with their simplest form. 80% less parts are used compared to a traditional seat. Made from recycled materials and a clever mesh backrest design, it enhances the natural light inside the cabin. In addition, it is one of the most remarkable features that it can be updated or personalized according to the taste of the user. It is a win-win situation as they are responsible and sustainable as the vehicle weight is reduced, and the improved cabin ambiance positively affects passenger comfort.

Lighter, more technological and longer driving range

Citroën Oli challenges its competitors in battery electric vehicle range and efficiency, demonstrating that electric vehicles can go further, last longer, be more versatile and cost less.

Although it looks sturdy, the oli is neither heavy nor bulky. Its target vehicle weight of around 1000kg makes it lighter than most similar compact SUVs. As a result, the all-electric powertrain only needs a 400 kWh battery for a target range of up to 40 km. Top speed is limited to 110 km/h to maximize efficiency. Excellent consumption of 10kWh/100km is realistic, and charging from 20% to 80% takes just 23 minutes.

long lasting friendship

Citroën Oli was designed to maximize longevity and durability. So the house can have multiple owners and a longer active life cycle. It can be transferred to more than one owner as “new” with its easy repair, renewal, update and personalization solution, or it can be transferred within the family and used for many years.

Citroën unveils a new program of 'CITIZEN by Citroën' services and experiences, all encompassing in Oli. The aim is to increase the sense of 'zen' electric Citroën users enjoy when they integrate vehicles into their lives and families.

Handy travel companion

Citroën oli, the ideal vehicle for connecting with nature and ecology, zama good companion at the same time. A handy companion that helps people live life to the fullest even when not on the go. A sanctuary free of new technologies, even a family member to enjoy. “Rather than the house they live in or the car they drive, people increasingly see their ecological footprints, who they are and how they live, as a positive expression of themselves and their personality,” said Anne Laliron, Head of Advanced Product and Transportation Solutions at Citroën. We believe that oli will inspire them to do things differently to simplify life and enjoy life while reducing it.” Citroën has a legacy of inventing lifestyles that connect people with their vehicles. The new generation of users can be even more creative in living with the unorthodox Ami. oli's optimistic spirit could potentially do the same.

electric lifestyle

As a zero-emissions mode of transportation, Oli can enable an electric lifestyle beyond its capacity, while as a useful electric vehicle it fits seamlessly into the user's electrical eco system, from solar panels to the general electricity needs of the home. For example, it can generate excess energy that can be redirected back to the grid when needed. Or, in the event of a power outage, it can meet the electricity needs of the consumer.

With its smart “Vehicle to Grid” (V2G) feature, a vehicle like oli has the potential to save money for its owner by storing excess energy obtained from solar panels at home. In addition to selling it back to energy suppliers, it also helps manage power problems when the grid has high demand or power outages.

Citroën Oli also makes life easier when you're away from home, on the beach in the summer or on a weekend camp, with its "Vehicle charging" (V2L) feature. Considering its 40kWh battery and 3,6kW plug output (equivalent to a 230v 16amp household outlet), the oli can theoretically power a 3000w electrical appliance for about 12 hours. oli offers practical and easy-to-use functionality whether on trips away from home or at home.

Design aesthetics supported by functionality

Oli has a remarkable and unusual design. With its sleek body 4,20 m long, 1,65 m high and 1,90 m wide, it reveals the appearance of a compact SUV. Defying conventional oli, family limousine, city traveler, adventure vehicle, coworker, or even part of the home, including powering everyday appliances, providing energy in the event of a power outage, or providing a platform to clean windows.

At Oli, the aesthetic approach has been carefully considered to reinforce functionality and versatility. Like Ami, oli takes a simple and intuitive approach. It differentiates itself with its color accents, bright materials and lively patterns that offer the opportunity for personalization.

Citroën designers planned every element of oli to be multifunctional, reducing weight and complexity by using fewer or integrated parts, using recycled or recyclable materials wherever possible.

Versatile platform

While the hood, trunk, and roof of a traditional car may seem like the perfect platform for helping with household chores like tree pruning, few vehicles are actually built with this capability in mind. In oli, the situation is different. The flat hood, roof and rear side panels were chosen to meet the goals of low weight, high strength and maximum durability as well as creating the vehicle's unique silhouette.

Panels made from recycled corrugated board, which is converted into a honeycomb sandwich structure between fiberglass reinforcement panels, were developed together with BASF. Covered with a hard and textured Elastocoat® protective layer, usually used in parking lots or loading ramps, Elastoflex® was coated with Polyurethane resin and painted with water-based BASF RM Agilis® paint. The panels are very rigid, light and strong. It's durable enough for an adult to stand on and 50 percent lighter than an equivalent steel ceiling construction.

The ceiling can serve different uses, from using it as a ladder to mounting a tent on a platform. Convenience is provided without the added weight or cost of exotic materials. Load-carrying versatility is also uncompromised. Roof bars on both sides of the roof panel offer the possibility of fixing accessories such as bike carriers and roof racks. Under the hood are storage spaces, including compartments for personal and emergency items, apart from charging cables.

Horizontal and vertical meet

The Citroën team used the contrast of vertical and horizontal design elements in the glass and lighting details to create flat surfaces due to source, material targets. Thanks to the vertical design of the windshield, the least amount of glass is used. This solution reduces weight and complexity. Apart from that, it helps protect passengers from the effects of the sun. What's more, oli's modest air conditioning system is estimated to help reduce energy requirements by up to 17%.

The Oli has an experimental "Aero Channel" system between the front of the hood and the flat top panel. This system blows air against the glass and creates a curtain effect to soften the airflow over the ceiling. The windshield frame is finished with a glossy infrared coating. Citroën will use this new color in conjunction with its new brand identity.

The contrast between horizontal and vertical is also visible in the side panels and glass. The front doors continue the Ami example. Even though they are mounted differently, both sides are the same. They are lighter, but still sturdy. It is also much easier to manufacture and assemble. They save 20 percent in weight compared to a family hatchback. Half the number of components is sufficient and with the removal of the loudspeaker, soundproofing and electrical wiring, approximately 1,7 kg is saved per door.

The exterior door panel is easier to install and maximizes interior storage space. Graceful curves flow upwards along the sides of the vehicle and run up the roof, above the side window. Large, horizontal windows tilt slightly towards the ground to help reduce the effects of the sun. Manual, easy-to-use “fold-up” pantograph opening sections similar to those on the Ami provide fresh air to the interior.

The narrower rear doors are hinged from the rear of the vehicle and use vertical glass to provide more light and visibility to the rear passengers. The shape change between the front and rear doors also offered the opportunity to add a passive air intake that provides ventilation for the rear seat passengers. Wide doors facilitate cabin access.

The front and rear lighting modules are also quite plain. But it does apply the contrast between two highly original horizontal lines and a vertical section. This application will be further developed as a distinctive Citroën lighting signature in future series production vehicles.

Innovative luggage

Instead of the usual trunk or hatchback, Oli offers an unexpected, inspiring solution in product design. Whether it's to carry disassembled furniture to the house or for the weekend, a board or roof tent to the beach offers functionality that meets all requirements. The individual rear head restraints fold towards the roof and the rear window opens upwards. This extends the length of the 994 mm wide removable flat load platform from 679 mm to 1050 mm.

Versatility and ease of installation are standard. The tailgate folds down and when the loading platform is removed, a height of up to 582 mm is created between the vehicle floor and the rear window. With the panel in place, there is a handy and secure luggage area with a height of 330mm underneath. The removable load platform is light and flat. It's also made from the same recycled material as the hood and roof panels.

Smart slides on both sides of the floor offer the possibility to attach hooks or accessories. In addition, there are additional secure storage areas on the side walls. The lean-designed tailgate consists of two parts. It features a steel panel with a central plate recess. There is one more section on it. In this section, there is the message “Nothing Moves Us Like Citroën”, which can be seen in the rear view mirror by everyone behind and the driver.

New but familiar logo

Transmitting an important message to car lovers through the tailgate, oli proudly carries the new Citroën identity, drawing on Citroën's deep-rooted engineering heritage.

The new “floating” logo complements this theme, while oli's design language contrasts between horizontal and vertical and round and flat to suggest functionality, technical competence and smart industrial design. Emphasizing engineering and technical efficiency, the horizontally positioned part of the logo symbolizes the brand's commitment to the comfort of its fans.

The new logo deliberately evokes the company's original 1919 logo and reinterprets it for future Citroën models. The brand identity is planned to be used in future products alongside Citroën's corporate structure and authorized dealers.

Tire life up to 500.000 kilometers

One of the key elements in maximizing the use of sustainable materials, increasing durability and reducing costs is wheels and tires. The 20-inch wheel and tire combination used in the oli offers a high level of efficiency. The tires were developed in conjunction with Goodyear. The project also showcases a new hybrid wheel prototype design.

All-aluminum wheels are expensive and energy-intensive to manufacture. Steel wheels are heavy. Therefore, it was decided to combine the two. The resulting hybrid wheels are 15 percent lighter than an equivalent steel wheel and contribute to a 6 kg reduction in overall vehicle weight. There are also significant design gains. Citroën has partnered with Goodyear to use the Eagle GO concept tire. It combines sustainability with longevity and smart technology to monitor the condition and condition of the tyre. Apart from sunflower oils and rice husk ash silica, the tread compound is made from sustainable or recycled materials, including pine tree resins and full natural rubber, which replaces synthetic, petroleum-based rubber.

Goodyear has set an ambitious target of achieving a lifespan of up to 11 km for the Eagle GO concept tire, thanks to the sustainable reuse of the carcass and the ability to renew the 500.000 mm tread depth twice over the tire's lifetime. The tire is also equipped with Goodyear SightLine technology, which continuously monitors various parameters with the sensor.

All-round protection

Citroën oli is quite safe thanks to the hard outer plastic sections. These sections are the same zamIt instantly reduces the number of parts, uses responsible materials and reduces weight. Citroën's business partner, Plastic Omnium, helped create a 'mono material' to implement the brand's signature design element. Strong yet lightweight side protection and 50% recyclable bumpers made from PolyPropylene containing 100% recycled material take an approach that facilitates recycling. Each wheel arch is covered with a strong recycled plastic protector with a horizontal top. This structure reflects the contrast theme used in the glass and lighting modules.

As in the Ami example, the middle sections of the bumpers are the same at the front and rear. Below are triangular infrared and strong 'handles'. These can be used to tow another vehicle or a large stone from the road. Even oli's strong white BASF RM Agilis® water-based paint is eco-active with low levels of volatile organic compounds (below 250g/lt).

The concept of interior design is reshaped

The designers preferred to be extraordinary while creating the interior. With larger screens, longer armrests, large surface panels, and more comfortable seats, the cabins of the vehicles shine like stars. But these choices mean weight and cost.

Instead of an extensive dashboard with multiple displays and hidden computers, the oli features a single symmetrical beam that runs across the width of the vehicle. The steering column and the wheel are fixed on one side. In the middle is a smartphone dock and five switch-type switches for the air conditioning system. Oli has only 34 pieces in this field. Whereas, a similar family-type compact hatchback uses about 75 parts on the front and center console.

The beam has an electric rail on which accessories can be attached via sliding USB sockets. This is ideal for powering appliances or plugging in the coffee machine while you wait for the kids to leave school. Two ventilation ducts, one in front of the driver and passenger, allow the use of a smaller air conditioning unit to further increase efficiency and reduce weight.

Behind and under the beam is a shelf made of BASF Elastollan®. The bright orange, recyclable 3D-printed Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) storage rack features flexible corks that hold objects like coffee cups or soft drink cans in place.

All infotainment and communication functions in the Oli are accessed via the smartphone inserted into the slot on the beam. Once the connection is established, phone information and apps are combined with essential vehicle data such as speed and charge level. Information is displayed by the 'Smart Band' system, which projects across the width of the windshield's lower frame.

The same approach is used for the in-car audio system. Cylindrical bluetooth speakers can be placed here to provide quality sound for listening to music on the go. By simply eliminating the usual sound system, 250g of weight was saved. Speakers can be removed. Thus, the enjoyment of music can continue wherever it is parked. Speakers can be hung on rails outside the vehicle. This means the enjoyment of the music continues uninterrupted whether you're dining outdoors or partying on the beach.

Looking for various solutions for HMI use, Citroën engineers came up with the unusual idea of using a professional modular gamepad joystick to mount on the steering wheel of oli. The vehicle has a rotating gear selector on the steering column for automatic transmission control. Along with the integrated "start stop" button, smaller levers operate the vehicle's headlights and signals.

Space efficiency

Instead of bulky seats that block the light and fill the cabin, space-saving seats are used in oli. These use 80% fewer parts than an equivalent SUV seat. The bright orange front seats are made of strong tubular frames. These are fitted with cushions completely covered with recycled polyester fabric. Of course, the seats are also fully recyclable.

The innovative 3D-printed mesh backrests feature an integrated headrest and are inspired by modern office furniture. Thin but extremely supportive seats are comfortable and firm just where they need to be. Products produced in conjunction with BASF are made from lightweight, fully recyclable Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU). They are covered with an orange material to make them look and feel attractive. Mesh backrests contribute to the comfort and convenience of passengers by enhancing the sense of space and light inside the vehicle.

Rear seat passengers can use the exposed tubular frame of the backrest to mount accessories. For example, a small USB powered tablet, bag hanging hooks, cup holder, magazine holder net or a small tray for kids to enjoy snacks make life in the cabin easier.

In keeping with Citroën's promise of comfort, the front seats are secured to the floor with recyclable TPU isolation rings that absorb road imperfections and vibrations and reflect the brand's “Progressive Hydraulic Cushions” technology. The comfortable individual rear seats are made from similar materials and the backrests fold down to expand the luggage compartment. Round ceiling-mounted TPU headrests hover above each backrest and fold up towards the ceiling when needed.

On either side of the vehicle is a hidden storage compartment for the first aid kit, which can be accessed under the rear seats and with the rear doors open. A storage console fills the space between the individual rear seats. The orange, recyclable soft 3D-printed TPU construction has flexible 'mushrooms' to keep items stable. BASF TPU parts used indoors can be recycled in bulk. This is a good step towards sustainable mono-material as an element of the Life Cycle Assessment.

The doors are free of complex and heavy door panels containing switches, armrests, speakers and window operators. Instead, oli's lean panels maximize storage while providing comfort and easy on-off.

The floor that increases usability

Instead of hard-to-clean carpet, oli has an Advanced Thermoplastic Polyurethane (E-TPU) floor covering developed with BASF. As flexible as foam rubber but lighter. Extremely flexible and highly abrasion resistant. The floor covering can be changed if a new color is desired.

The floor is covered with a very flexible and waterproof material. It can be easily cleaned with a hose. Recyclable TPU drain plugs in the floor make it easy to clean up sand and mud at the beach or after a damp jungle hike.

Lifecycle

An important element of the Oli story is that it was designed to last, to create its own circular economy. Refurbished pieces, new decors or colors and even zamInstantly upgraded parts ensure that the vehicle can be easily and affordably readjusted into the next lives for new owners.

The total cost of ownership is low. When a door, headlight or bumper needs to be replaced, Citroën can source recycled parts from other vehicles that can no longer be maintained. In general, if a vehicle is more expensive to replace than to buy a new one, that vehicle is not renewed. oli changes this understanding. When refurbishing is no longer economical, Citroën turns each oli into a recycled parts donor for other vehicles in need of parts, or sends other parts to general recycling.

a guiding light

According to Vincent Cobée, the key to a happy future is; It's about how we spend, choose, consume, move and pollute. It depends on reforming as well as adapting our way of thinking. “We are facing the problems created by our excessive consumption habits. And the automotive industry, like any other industry, is not exempt from this process. Citroën wants to prove that there are unorthodox ways of change that are not boring or punitive. Ami is a great example of this and we are proud of her success. As a clever solution, our 'laboratory on wheels' Citroën oli shows how we can inspire the families of the future. oli is remarkable and unusual. At Citroën, we understand that you will not go unnoticed with an ordinary stance. Citroën oli showcases our transport mission: responsible, straightforward and affordable for your daily life. Still aspirational, desirable and enjoyable. oli is our guiding light for the solution you want to have as the only tool your family will need ten years from now.”
