MAN Lion's City E Wins 'Bus Of The Year' Award

The MAN Lion's City 12 E performed impressively from the first minute during the 'Bus Euro Test' in Limerick, Ireland. The all-electric city bus has successfully completed the nearly 2.500-kilometer journey from Germany to Ireland.

The MAN Lion's City 12 E also impressed the jury throughout the 'Bus Euro Test' comparison. In May, the expert jury invited five bus manufacturers from Europe to Ireland for an international bus comparison test. After a busy week of numerous driver tests and long technical discussions, the decision for the new 'Bus of the Year 2023' was clearly in favor of the MAN Lion's City 12 E. The international jury of 23 European commercial vehicle journalists was particularly impressed with the overall concept of the city bus, which scored points for its range, reliability, comfort and, above all, sustainability.

Jury President Tom Terjesen said: “The new MAN Lion's City 12 E has a groundbreaking design, a high level of comfort and a very quiet interior. The driver's cab is one of the best on the market and offers high security. From the initial drawing to the actual product, MAN has focused on electric mobility. Thus, everything fit together and the bus did not become a 'diesel vehicle converted to electric'. The 'International Bus & Coach of the Year - International City Bus and Intercity Bus' jury felt positive towards the bus at every stage, from the first test drive to the decision of the MAN Lion's City 12 E as the 'Bus of the Year 2023 – 2023 Bus of the Year'. fed,” he said.

The award was presented by Tom Terjesen, Chairman of the Jury, Rudi Kuchta, Head of the MAN Truck & Bus Business Unit, at the 'Stars of the Year' event, hosted by the German Automotive Industry Association (VDA) to celebrate the opening of IAA Transportation 2022 in Hannover. or given. The 'Bus of the Year' award, which has been awarded for the last 30 years, is considered the bus industry's most important international award.

“We are even more proud that our MAN Lion's City E was so well received by the expert jury and that we are now receiving this prestigious award,” said Rudi Kuchta.

“The award impressively showcases the outstanding work of the entire MAN team. same zamAt the moment, it forms another fantastic new chapter in the success story of the MAN Lion's City E.”

To enable operators to adapt their eBus perfectly to future use, MAN offers, among other elements, two battery usage strategies for the Lion's City E: the 'Reliable Range' strategy (up to 270 km) and the 'For ranges up to 350 km'. 'Max Range' strategy. In addition, the bus's new CO2 air conditioning system and improved heating circuit provide greater efficiency. Another innovation is modular batteries. In this way, electric bus customers will be able to determine the number of battery packs from autumn. The fully electric city bus will therefore be better adapted to the needs and requirements of each customer in terms of range and passenger capacity.

MAN offers its customers many alternatives in terms of size. For example, there is also a short 10.5-metre midibus version of the Lion's City E with one of the largest battery capacities in the segment. Thanks to its record-breaking turning circle and compact dimensions, Midibus offers an ideal solution especially for city centers with narrow streets and dense pedestrian areas. Midibus completes MAN's electric bus series, which currently consists of 10.5 meters, 12.2 meters and 18.1 meters vehicles.

The sales figures of the MAN Lion's City E also clearly reveal how popular the vehicle is. More than 1.000 orders have already been placed since sales of the all-electric bus began.

As part of the 'Bus Euro Test', the MAN Lion's City E made an impressive trip to Ireland, touring Europe, proving how powerful an all-electric city bus can be. During the 'Electrifying Europe Tour', the twelve-metre city bus crossed eight countries in ten days. The vehicle covered a total distance of 2.448,8 kilometers and consumed a total of 1.763,7 kWh of energy. This corresponds to approximately 0,72 kWh per kilometer. These top values were achieved thanks to Lion's City E's efficient technology and an impressive 20,8 percent recovery rate. Six lithium-ion battery packs (with a capacity of 480 kWh) located on the roof of the eBus provided energy for travel in cities, rural areas and mountains. The vehicle was recharged after each daily phase and no intermediate charging was required. Because the electric bus had a range of up to 350 kilometers.

With regard to the propulsion system, MAN relies on a central engine on the rear axle for the eBus, or on two central engines on the second and third axles that assist in driving and recovery in the articulated bus. MAN Lion's City E meets the need to reduce noise and pollutant emissions in cities with its locally emission-free propulsion system. Meanwhile, the reliable technology of MAN Lion's City E will also be used in MAN's eBus chassis in the future.

Kuchta said, “In order to meet the increasing worldwide demand for electric buses and make a significant contribution to sustainable mobility, we also offer the MAN electric bus solution with our eBus chassis to international markets outside Europe.” In the future, the chassis will provide bodybuilders with the perfect basis for their all-electric models.
