Spacious interior and versatile large trunk

The new EQB enriches the successful Mercedes compact car family with its bond with two models, the EQA and the compact SUV GLB, with which it shares advanced driving technology. His bond with these two models; The long wheelbase of 2829 mm gives it features such as a spacious and variable interior and an optional third row of seats with 2 independent seats.

5 seater model; It has a length of 4684 mm, a width of 1834 mm and a height of 1667 mm, bringing with it large interior volumes. Headroom in the front row of seats is 1035 mm, in the second row it is 979 mm in the five-seat version. With 87 mm, the legroom at the rear of the 5-seat version reaches a comfortable level.

The EQB's trunk is also flat and wide. By offering a volume of 5 to 495 liters in the 1710-seat version, and 7 to 465 liters in the 1620-seat version, it carries the characteristics of a medium-size estate vehicle. The backrests of the second row seats can be adjusted in several steps as standard, and this row can be moved forward and backward by 140 mm, optionally. In this way, the luggage volume can be increased up to 190 liters.

A third row of seats consisting of two independent seats is available as an option in the new EQB. These seats mean comfortable space for passengers up to 1,65 metres. Extendable head restraints, belt-tightening and force-limiting seat belts on all outer seats, and curtain airbags for third-row passengers provide enhanced safety. A total of 4 child seats can be placed in the second and third rows, and a child seat can also be placed on the front passenger seat. The third row seats increase luggage space when folded down to be flush with the luggage floor.

Electric design aesthetics with character

The new EQB interprets Mercedes-EQ's "Progressive Luxury" in a sharp and characteristic way. The characteristic Mercedes-EQ black panel grille with its central star lends itself to a distinctive appearance. The uninterrupted light strip at the front and rear stands out as another distinctive design feature of the all-electric world of Mercedes-EQ vehicles. A horizontal fiber optic strip connects the daytime running lights of the full-LED headlights, creating a distinctive look that is immediately distinguishable, day or night. The blue accents inside the carefully shaped headlights reinforce the Mercedes-EQ's signature.

The large surface of the dashboard has a recess in the driver and passenger area. MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), which brings together the driver, control and instrument screens, is greeted by the large-screen cockpit. Aluminum tubular decorations used on the doors, center console and passenger side of the front console support the perception of quality in the interior.

interior design

The individually configurable MBUX offers advantages such as a powerful computer, bright screens and graphics, customizable presentation, full color head-up display, augmented reality and navigation with learner software, and a voice command system activated by the keyword "Hey Mercedes".

Information on the instrument cluster and infotainment screen is easy to read thanks to the high-resolution displays. The system, which not only draws attention with its visual presentation, offers an intuitive use. The Mercedes-EQ menu on the infotainment screen can also be used to access content related to charging options, electricity consumption and energy flow. The right display in the instrument cluster is a "watt meter", not a tachometer. The upper part shows the power percentage and the lower part the recovery level. The indicator on the left can be used to show whether the target can be reached without a charging break. Colors change according to driving conditions.

Powerful and efficient

The rear axle of the EQB 350 4MATIC is equipped with eATS with a new continuously driven synchronous motor. The rotor of the AC motor is equipped with permanent magnets in the continuously driven synchronous motor of the extremely compact system. The magnets and thus the rotor follow the rotating alternating current field in the stator windings. The motor is called synchronous because the rotor rotates at the same speed as the magnetic field of the stator. The frequency is adapted to the frequency inverters of the power electronics at the speed requested by the drive. This design; It provides advantages such as high power density, high efficiency and high power generation consistency.

Battery: Part of the intelligent thermal management system

The new EQB is equipped with a high energy density lithium-ion battery. It has a maximum voltage of 420 V, a nominal capacity of approximately 190 Ah and a usable energy content of 66,5 kWh.

The battery, consisting of five modules, is located under the passenger compartment. The battery modules have an aluminum body and the same zamAt the same time, it is protected by the vehicle's own body structure. The battery body is a part of the vehicle structure and an integral part of the collision safety of the vehicle body.

Charge management: CCS charging socket for alternating current and direct current

The new EQB can be charged up to 11 kW with alternating current (AC) with the integrated charger at home or at public charging stations. The charging time required for a full charge varies depending on the existing infrastructure and market-specific vehicle equipment. With the Mercedes-Benz Wallbox, charging is much faster than with a domestic socket.

Charging is even faster at direct current (DC) fast charging stations. The new EQB can be charged with up to 100 kW of power, depending on the SoC (State of Charge) and the temperature of the high voltage battery. It takes 10 minutes to charge from 80 percent to 32 percent. A range of up to 15 kilometers (WLTP) can be provided with a 300-minute charge. The EQB is equipped with a CCS (Combined Charging Systems) connector on the right side panel as standard in Europe and the USA for AC and DC charging.

Energy recovery

ECO Assist directs the driver with a message to take their foot off the accelerator pedal in situations such as when reaching the speed limit, gliding or special energy-recovery control. For this, navigation data, traffic sign identification system and information from smart safety aids (radar and stereo camera) are processed as a whole.

ECO Assist also anticipates driving conditions when deciding whether to drive with low resistance or with energy recovery. At this point, road slopes in the map data, driving conditions in the driving direction and speed limits are taken into account. The system takes into account driving conditions (corners, junctions, roundabouts, inclines), speed limits and distance to vehicles ahead in its driving recommendations and efficiency strategy.

ECO Assist controls acceleration depending on driving conditions, within the limits of the system, by taking the driver's foot off the accelerator pedal. A visual warning is given to the driver for this. “Take your foot off the accelerator pedal” symbol is displayed on the infotainment screen or, if available, on the “head-up display”. SpousezamIn a flash, a diagram also explains to the driver the reason for the recommendation, with examples such as “junction ahead” or “slope ahead”.

The new EQB offers different energy recovery options. The process involves charging a high-voltage battery by converting mechanical motion into electrical energy in flow mode or during braking.

The driver can manually adjust the energy recovery intensity using the grips behind the steering wheel. The left hand grip increases the energy recovery level and the right decreases it. The driver can see the selected setting in the instrument cluster. The system includes different recovery phases: DAuto (conditionally optimized energy recovery via ECO Assist), D+ (percolation), D (low energy recovery) and D- (medium energy recovery). The driver can brake independently of the energy recovery mode to stop.

EQB: Aerodynamics

The EQB achieves a very good Cd value of 0,28, while offering a total area of 2,53 m2 at the front. The most important aerodynamic features are the completely closed cool air control system in the upper section, aerodynamically efficient front and rear spoilers, an almost completely closed underbody, specially optimized aero wheels and specially adapted front and rear wheel spoilers.

The aerodynamic development of the new EQB has largely been carried out in the digital environment. The numerical simulation was confirmed by extensive measurements in the wind tunnel. The EQB is built on the aerodynamic foundation of the already very good GLB. A new aerodynamic setup was created due to new bumpers and different diffuser angle. Airflow separation at the front wheels is reduced by the shape of the bumper and by the wedge-shaped profiles and wheel spoiler design developed specifically for the EQB.

The underbody cladding is also new. As an electric vehicle, the EQB does not need a transmission tunnel, exhaust system and fuel tank. These are replaced by a smooth-surfaced battery. Airflow under the fuselage is directed from the front spoiler to the engine compartment cladding and through the three main floor panels to the closed rear axle and from there to the diffuser fascia. Compared to the EQA, the EQB has an additional coating on its main floor, thanks to its longer wheelbase and slightly different battery position. In this way, the gap between the battery and the axle cover is closed. In general, a lot of attention was paid to details. For example, the spines that support the floor coverings all run from front to back.

Low noise and vibration levels (NVH)

While developing the EQB, high-level noise and driving comfort were targeted. In order to achieve this goal, particular attention was paid to noise from the propulsion system and the integration of electrical power-train systems. NVH-related components were configured during digital development, hardware tested during implementation, and then integrated into the vehicle. As with the construction of a house, the measures were commissioned during the foundation and rough construction phase and were completed with interior fittings and insulation. Based on this logic, the isolation or encapsulation of the electric drive system is much more effective than the damping measures inside. Acoustic insulation measures; It includes an isolated passenger cabin, effective damping systems on metal surfaces and acoustically effective trim elements.

The single-speed gearbox on the front axle (eATS), which is one of the basic equipment of the electric power-train system, runs smoothly thanks to the improved microgeometry of the gears. NVH measures in the electric powertrain were incorporated into the EQB early in the development process.

In an electrically powered vehicle, there is no low-frequency background noise as in an internal combustion engine. This means that high-frequency sounds become more pronounced. For this reason, the front and rear axle drives of the EQB were isolated at several points. Components such as the front and rear axle, subframe and rubber bushings were developed and optimized in parallel with the digital development phase. All these efforts ensure that there are no disturbing noises inside the vehicle.

Low road noise thanks to improved rigidity and carrier concept

To reduce road and tire noise, the engineers implemented a compact, slip-resistant integrated mounting method that increases the bearing rigidity of the front axle. The subframe of the multi-link rear axle was insulated with rubber bushings. The front subframe is integrated into the C-ring structure and therefore offers the necessary rigidity for isolation. A crossmember is integrated into the multifunctional bed to increase the rigidity of the rear subframe.

A real Mercedes in terms of passive safety, too.

Building on the solid body structure of the GLB, the EQB's body is adapted to the specific requirements of an electric car. The battery is placed on the chassis floor in a special body of its own. The battery protector on the front of the battery prevents the energy storage unit from being pierced by foreign objects. Of course, the EQB also meets the brand's extensive crash testing program. The battery and all current-carrying components meet extremely stringent requirements. A true family car, the EQB can accommodate up to four child seats in the second and optional third rows and one more child seat in the front passenger seat.

The accident safety of the EQB has been confirmed at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Center for Vehicle Safety (TFS). At this advanced crash center, prototypes with large electric batteries were tested under harsh crash conditions. The black panel façade was tested to comply with pedestrian protection requirements.

The safety of the vehicle body in the event of a possible accident is supported by internal testing in line with legal requirements and findings from real-life accident scenarios. For example, the ceiling crush test is just one of the tests applied. In this test, for example, the durability of the ceiling in the event of a rollover is tested. In the roof crush test, the vehicle falls on the roof from a height of 50 cm with a slight slope. Only one of the A-pillars is expected to deform in this test.

Safety concept for high-voltage system: automatic shutdown in case of collision

Mercedes-Benz's experience in high-voltage drive systems brings with it a multi-stage safety concept. The high-voltage system can be reversibly or irreversibly shut down automatically in a collision, depending on the severity of the accident. Another feature of this comprehensive safety concept is the automatic interruption of charging when an impact is detected while the vehicle is stationary at a fast charging station (DC charging). In addition to this stand-alone control system, the EQB is equipped with a special disconnect point that can be used by rescuers to shut down the high voltage system.

Family car: Up to five child seats can be fitted

Seat belts are the most important safety system in a vehicle. The driver and front passenger seats are equipped with three-point seat belts with belt tensioners and force-limiting. In conjunction with PRE-SAFE® (optional), the front seats are equipped with electrically reversible seat belt tensioners. The two outer seats in the second row are each equipped with a three-point seat belt with pulley tensioner and belt force limiter. The middle seat in this row is equipped with a standard three-point automatic seat belt. Optional third row seats with two independent single seats are fitted with foldable headrests and seat belts with belt tensioners and force limiters.

driving assistance systems

The new EQB is equipped with driving assistance systems that make the driver's life easier. Within the scope of the Driving Assistance Package, turning maneuver, emergency corridor, exit warning that warns the driver of approaching cyclists or vehicles, and detection of pedestrians near pedestrian crossings are offered.

Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Brake Assist are standard. These two pieces of equipment aim to prevent a collision or mitigate its consequences through autonomous braking. The system can also prevent collisions by braking at typical city speeds for stationary vehicles and pedestrians crossing the street.

The EQB can be driven in partially automatic mode under certain conditions. For this, the system closely monitors the traffic situation and advanced camera and radar systems monitor the driving direction. EQB same zamcurrently uses map and navigation data for driving assistance functions. For example, Active Distance Assistant DISTRONIC as part of the optional Driving Assistance Package supports the driver in different driving conditions and can adjust the speed predictably and appropriately, for example when approaching bends, junctions or roundabouts. In doing so, it interacts with ECO Assist. Active Emergency Stop Brake Assist is also available.

Designed for driving stability and comfort

The EQB is equipped as standard with a comfortable suspension with steel springs and a multi-link rear axle on all versions. The Adaptive Damping System, offered as an option, offers the driver the opportunity to choose the preferred suspension characteristic.

MacPherson suspension works on the front axle of the EQB. The wheels are steered by cross arms, MacPherson swingarm and two link arms below each wheel centre. Forged aluminum swingarms reduce moving masses, while steering knuckles are made from cast aluminum.

All EQB versions use an advanced four-link rear axle. Three transverse links and a trailing arm on each rear wheel offer maximum driving stability, enhanced vertical and lateral dynamics as well as driving comfort. The rear axle is supported by a subframe, which is isolated from the body with rubber mounts.

More grip: 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The EQB 350 4MATIC (average energy consumption WLTP: 18,1 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) is equipped with all-wheel drive. The 4MATIC system works with the Torque Shift function. Torque is adjusted 100 times per second at a continuously variable rate between two electric units on the front and rear axles. If the driver does not need the full power requirement, the motor that is not needed is completely shut down to reduce consumption. Therefore, the efficient, continuously driven synchronous motor (PSM) on the rear axle suffices for low power requirements. Higher performance requirements are met by the asynchronous motor (ASM) on the front axle.

Everything, including snow and ice zamThe system, which works to provide maximum grip and driving stability at any moment, intervenes in the spinning wheels and adjusts the torque distribution accordingly. Since the two electric motors are controlled independently of each other, the loss of traction on one axle does not prevent the transmission of torque to the other axle. Just like with a conventional center differential lock.
