The second week of January is celebrated as Energy Saving Week all over the world. The issue is trying to be kept on the agenda in every field, especially with Turkey's inclusion in the fight against climate change and the Paris Climate Agreement. Turkey has set a target to reduce its carbon emissions to zero emissions by 2050 (0). The importance of electric vehicles, which are completely built on energy efficiency, is increasing. We talked to Altınbaş University Electric, Autonomous and Unmanned Vehicles Application and Research Center (AUTONOM) Managers about the contribution of these vehicles to energy saving.

AUTONOM Center Manager, Altınbaş University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Head of Mechanical Engineering Department Dr. Faculty Member Süleyman Baştürk stated that they have been working since 2018 to make electric vehicles more usable in the automotive sector and in daily life in line with the zero emission target. “This year, we established the Electric, Autonomous and Unmanned Vehicles Application and Research Center. Here, we produce solutions for the electric vehicles sector and we are working on micro-mobility applications.” said. Süleyman Baştürk stated that with the students they train, they support a well-equipped engineer infrastructure suitable for this sector, and that they are in talks with TOGG in this context.

AUTONOM Deputy Center Director and Altınbaş University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Lecturer Dr. Doğu Çağdaş Atilla pointed out that increasing the use of electric vehicles is the most important step that increases efficiency within the scope of combating climate change. Doğu Çağdaş Atilla said, “Even though the efficiency of traditional vehicles varies according to the vehicle, it is between 20% and 40%. When we look at the engines of electric vehicles, we see that the operating efficiency exceeds 90%. Electric motors have such a clear advantage.” made statements.

“Electric motor vehicles are in the 1st stage in the fight against climate change”

Doğu Çağdaş Atilla said, “At first glance, it can be said that electric motors have zero emissions. We see that even the cleanest of the internal combustion engines in conventional vehicles has an emission value of 100 g / km. The European Union did not charge 99 g/km and below taxes to encourage low emissions, and zero emissions were set as a target in 2050 with the Paris Climate Agreement. Doğu Çağdaş Atilla “It should be noted that since the source of electrical energy used in electric vehicles is mostly obtained from fossil fuels, electric vehicles do not have zero emissions indirectly.” he added. Despite this, he pointed out that electric motors are more efficient than internal combustion engines. “When we consider fossil fuel as a well-to-pump and well-to-plug, efficiency comes to 23% in electric vehicles and 13% in internal combustion vehicles.” he made the comparison. He underlined that if the electricity used in these vehicles is obtained from renewable energy sources such as wind energy and solar energy, the negative effects on carbon emissions will be greatly reduced and the target of 2050 emissions in 0 can only be achieved in this way. Doğu Çağdaş Atilla stated that all vehicle manufacturers will include electric vehicles in their portfolios after 2030, and pointed out that technology is developing very rapidly and that internal combustion vehicles will be out of circulation in a short time, which we predict.

“The consumption cost of vehicles is expensive. The state should encourage the use”

Süleyman Baştürk, who also made recommendations for the widespread use of electric vehicles, stated that the battery used in these vehicles is an expensive product. He stated that as battery technology develops, they anticipate that the costs will come to more reasonable levels. However, he said that the critical point here is government incentives. Stating that it is very important to include the use of these vehicles in the scope of incentives, Süleyman Baştürk emphasized that with the widespread use of silent electric vehicles, the city noise, which is one of our biggest complaints, will decrease and energy efficiency will increase. Süleyman Baştürk said, “This issue should be kept on the agenda at every stage within the scope of the protocols on combating climate change and Green Energy.” He stated that the European Union now supports R&D projects in order to switch to electric motor vehicles not only for passenger cars but also for public transportation. He emphasized that they have transferred enormous resources to projects such as e-BRT (Electric Bus Rapid Transit), which can also be defined as electric metrobus, within the scope of Horizon 2020. “We also have initiatives to get involved in these studies.” gave the information.

“Micromobility will gain importance”

Eastern Contemporary Atilla, on the other hand, is the last member of the EU. zamPointing out that he developed and encouraged the use of micro-mobility vehicles such as scooters and electric bicycles at the same time, he said, “These are low-energy vehicles that provide access to public transportation lines. In addition to legal support, they also provide large funds to develop this entire ecosystem. The latest as a micro mobility solution in Turkey zamIn April 2021, the "Electric Scooter Regulation" was published for scooters that attract a lot of attention at the moment. By using these vehicles, it is aimed to provide transportation to public transportation lines without emission of emissions and to facilitate the use of public transportation. For example, those who want to reach metrobus stops in Avcılar from side streets will help reduce carbon emissions by using scooters instead of minibuses.” make statements.
