It helps to prevent the vehicle from slipping by increasing the ground grip on snowy and icy roads. Winter tires should be fitted when the air temperature starts to drop below +7 degrees.

It is recommended to switch to winter tires in October and November when the weather starts to cool. Vehicles that are legally required to wear winter tires in Turkey are required to change their summer tires from 1 December. According to the laws of our country, vehicles that are obliged to install winter tires must use winter tires between 1 December and 1 April. Depending on the seasonal conditions, the expiry date of the obligation to wear winter tires can be extended by 1 month.

Can Winter Tires Be Used in Summer?

The most important advantage of winter tires is the high ground holding power on snowy, rainy and icy surfaces. Thus, the braking distance is reduced by up to 15% and accident risks are prevented. Winter tires designed for rainy, snowy and icy conditions run the risk of excessive wear in the heat of the summer. Since the rolling resistance is higher than summer tires, it increases the fuel consumption of the vehicle.

The percentage of natural rubber used in the design of winter tires is higher than that of summer tires, which makes winter tires softer. Since winter tires are softer on dry roads, they can cause the vehicle to skid on fast corners. The use of winter tires in summer causes both reduced driving safety and financial losses.

Is it mandatory to use winter tires?

In our country, compulsory winter tire application is made against the danger of icing and snow that may occur on the roads in the winter season when the weather conditions are harsh. According to Turkish laws, between 1 December and 1 April, certain vehicles are obliged to wear winter tires. The answer to the question, which vehicles are required to have winter tires, is published in the Official Gazette. Accordingly, all tires on the driven axles of commercial vehicles such as trucks, tankers, buses and tow trucks carrying cargo and passengers; All tires of minibuses, buses and pickup trucks should be replaced with winter tires as of December 1st.
