Pirelli Becomes First Tire Company to Earn FIA's Three-Star Environmental Accreditation

Pirelli's motorsport unit has been awarded three stars by the FIA (International Automobile Federation), which governs world motorsport, as part of the Environmental Accreditation Programme. The three stars represent the highest score possible under the program, which is designed to show the various measures participants must take to achieve the best environmental standards.

Pirelli's environmental approach will enable the group to be carbon neutral by 2030. Motor sports activities are also moving in this direction, starting with the company's main campaign, Formula 1™. Examples of Pirelli's own environmental sustainability targets, both in business and production, are to reduce total CO2025 emissions by 2% (compared to 25 levels) by 2015 and to purchase 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. Pirelli has already achieved this second target at all its European plants.

Among the measures taken by Pirelli within the scope of Formula 1™ are practices such as increasing the use of renewable materials, removing single-use plastics from trackside operations and a supply chain fully managed according to environmental and social sustainability criteria. Pirelli's motorsport operation has also successfully passed numerous stringent sustainability audits covering everything from carbon emissions to environmental impact.

Giovanni Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli Prestige, Senior Vice President, Motorsports, Sustainability and Future Mobility, commented: “We are honored to be awarded three stars by the FIA, as a focus on environmental sustainability is at the heart of Pirelli's development strategy and is fully integrated into our motorsport business model. . We work closely with the FIA with our sustainability approach, which we always care about in motor sports, and we share the same vision for sustainable mobility and sports.”

FIA President Jean Todt said: “The FIA's certification program sets an important standard for measuring sustainability in the world of motorsport. We congratulate the Pirelli motorsport team for achieving a three-star rating, emphasizing the commitment to our critical environmental goals.”

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1™, added: “Pirelli has become the first tire company in motorsport to receive this award for the clear environmental direction it has advanced and the determination it has shown. An organization known for Formula 1 innovations and technologies. We use this heritage to have a sustainable future and to offer solutions that can make a difference in the real world. I congratulate Pirelli on this impressive achievement and its continued commitment to Formula 1.

Pirelli's commitment to creating sustainable value continues to be crowned with its inclusion in some of the world's most prestigious sustainability indexes, as evidenced by the company's responsible management and economic, social and environmental performance. Pirelli's place in the Dow Jones World and European Sustainability Indices was reaffirmed in 2021. In addition, it was selected to the UN Global Compact LEAD group and became the only company from the global automotive industry. The company, which was once again shown among the Global Leaders in the fight against climate change in 2020, took its place in the CDP's Climate A list. Pirelli also succeeded to be in the Gold Classification in the 2021 S&P Sustainability Yearbook, becoming the only company in the global automotive industry to be eligible for this category.
