Beijing Municipality officials announced that they will increase the quota of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the new car license plate allocation in 2022. According to the municipality's car quota allocation management office, the city will allocate 2022 new license plates in 100, increasing the previously set quota of 60 for NEVs to 70. The quota for conventional fuel cars will be reduced from 40 to 30.
The office said the move, which takes into account increased NEV ranges along with rapid progress in batteries and other technologies, aims to reduce fuel vehicle exhaust pollution and improve air quality in the Chinese capital.
Beijing has taken measures to reduce air pollution, such as limiting the number of new license plates and removing one-fifth of private fuel vehicles from the road on weekdays, according to the last digit of their license plate numbers. The license plate lottery system for gas cars leads many drivers to NEVs, which receive government subsidies and do not face such a ban on their workday.
