Suppliers must be ready to transform to stay competitive!
Speaking at the opening of the conference, OIB Chairman of the Board Baran Çelik underlined that the automotive industry has rapidly transformed into a different industry than it is today. Stating that “This transformation brings risks and opportunities for our supply industry”, Çelik said, “Many components and parts used in vehicles working with internal combustion engines; It is not used in electric and autonomous vehicles. Some business areas related to the industry are disappearing, but new business areas are also emerging. It is very important for our suppliers to prepare for this process as soon as possible in order to maintain our competitiveness in the transforming sector. According to a study by Boston Consulting; In Europe, there will be a loss of employment of 500 thousand people in companies producing parts for internal combustion vehicles, while companies that supply new generation zero-emission vehicles will employ 300 thousand people. In other words, some of the employment loss to be experienced as a result of the transformation in the automotive industry can be compensated with new business areas. For this reason, it is important to encourage and expand specialization in new occupational fields.

In the past, the customer bought the vehicle, used it for 5-6 years and sold it. In the future, we will have a vehicle subscription and pay monthly installments. Everything is digital, the vehicle will be at our doorstep, but all the risks, unexpected repairs, insurance, etc. will be included in the monthly subscription fee. Many things will change, such as people's understanding of the car, sales systems, spare parts.”
The link between Asia, Turkey and Europe…
Stating that Asia, and especially China, has great potential, Prof. Dr. Dudenhöffer said, “In 2019, 80 million passenger cars were sold worldwide. In 2020, this number dropped to 69 million due to the pandemic. The vast majority of these 69 million vehicles were sold to Asia and from there to China. Asia has a great potential, it should not be missed. It is very important to establish, maintain and develop cooperation with Asia. The connection between Asia, Turkey and Europe will enable important collaborations. China aims to be the world leader in technology, and the electric vehicle will play a very serious role in achieving this goal. Along with China, India, Vietnam and Pakistan also have serious potential. After Asia, the USA, Canada and Mexico come in the Americas. Europe, on the other hand, is a region with the 3rd important and potential market share”.
“China will be the first country to switch to electric vehicles”
Using the sentence “We are facing an exciting and profitable world”, Dudenhöffer said, “AutoX-robot taxis are operating in Shenzhen, China. Autox shows that China is leading. China will be the first country to switch to electric vehicles. China has a clear promise; It will be carbon neutral by 2060. It will be the world's technology leader. “Electric vehicles will play an important role in achieving this goal,” he said.
Opportunity for Turkey is at the door!
Emphasizing that the sales of internal combustion engine vehicles will decrease significantly in 2050, Prof. Dr. Dudenhöffer said that Turkey could benefit from this process. Dudenhöffer made the following statements: “Sales of vehicles with internal combustion engines will fall by 2030 percent by 70. If suppliers in this field have not done anything to date, it is already too late. The faster we adapt to it, the better. The electric vehicle chart is growing very fast. Large suppliers are also establishing new businesses in this sense. It is a very new and improvable business area, everyone wants to be included here. It is said that 500 thousand people will lose their jobs in this process, but much more new employment will be provided. I see this situation as a great opportunity for Turkey. The opportunity for Turkey is at the door. As an automotive country, Turkey can adapt to the transformation and benefit with its qualified workforce, strong main and supply infrastructure, competence and potential. It is very important for Turkey to take an active role and participate in the electric vehicles investment network. The carbon neutral target is not possible without electric vehicles.
