Stainless steel was chosen as the raw material for the new bus project created in line with the demands in the North American market. Thus, a concept that meets the expectations of the market in corrosion resistance was presented. Stainless steel, which is a new world in many aspects such as strength and production technique in bus bodywork; It was developed in accordance with the manufacturing processes by performing analyzes and tests according to new parameters. In order to meet the American tipping standard FMVSS 227, high-strength stainless steel has been used in certain regions to be future-ready, although not yet mandatory, and these solutions have been validated by simulation and analysis. However, studies are continuing to fully provide FMVSS 227 regulation. Prototypes of the stainless steel body, completely developed by Turkish engineers, were produced in Turkey and assembly tests were carried out at Hoşdere Bus Factory. During the development phase, many tests were carried out to provide the desired strength at the welding points, and the welding wire and parameters suitable for the stainless steel material used were determined.

The applications required for the commissioning of the buses in production and the applications necessary for the maintenance and repair of the buses at the service centers in the USA after sales were developed specifically for these buses by the bus R&D diagnostic team. These applications have been tested and validated on prototypes. It is planned that the changes and support requests that may arise regarding these applications in the future will be met by the Mercedes-Benz Türk Bus R&D Diagnosis Team.

Patented solutions applied

The search for new raw materials needed for the first bus made of stainless steel resulted in the receipt of new patents. The columns on the side wall of the bus are among the most basic carrier parts of the vehicle. Mercedes-Benz Türk Bus R&D Center also carried out a special study in order to protect the volume defined as the living space in terms of passenger safety in case the buses lie on their sides in the event of an accident. Thick and high-strength materials were used thanks to the "Pipe in Pipe" application (Nested Profiles), which was developed specifically for these buses for the first time, designed and patented for the side parts of the buses. New and high-strength raw materials were used for stainless pipe materials suitable for these properties.

In addition, for the first time, a bumper with very high energies damping feature has been developed specifically for this vehicle. In this way, the parts on the front surface of the vehicle were protected in collisions up to a certain speed, and the vehicle was enabled to continue on the road. In the development studies carried out entirely by Mercedes-Benz Turkish engineers, while ensuring harmony with the vehicle's outer lines, the same zamAlthough the structure absorbs such high energy at the time, it was also taken into account that it should be as light as possible. In addition to the patents obtained from the Turkish Patent Institute as a result of the studies, evaluations regarding the patent application in the USA are continuing.
