Within the scope of the 20th Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, held on September 24-9 this year, a free screening program will be held in 6 centers in 8 provinces in Turkey. Head and Neck Cancers Association warns against symptoms, noting that the success of treatment reaches 80-90% when the disease is diagnosed in the early stages.
Head and Neck Cancers Association conducts Head and Neck Cancer screening in certain centers in 6 provinces as part of the “Make Sense” campaign carried out by the European Head and Neck Society. On September 22, Florence Nightingale Hospital and IU Istanbul Medical Faculty Hospital in Istanbul, Dokuz Eylul University Hospital and Ege University Hospital in Izmir, Ankara Dışkapı Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital, Antalya Memorial Hospital, Health Sciences University Adana City Training and Research Hospital and in Trabzon, in the otolaryngology clinics of Karadeniz Technical University Farabi Hospital, patients must apply to the relevant centers for free scans.
During the Head and Neck Cancer Awareness week, various awareness projects have been carried out under the leadership of Head and Neck Cancers Association in Turkey since 2013. Noting that this year, a free screening program will be held within the scope of the week, Atılım University Faculty of Medicine Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Member, General Secretary of the European Head and Neck Cancer Society and Secretary General of the Head and Neck Cancers Association Prof. Dr. Şefik Hoşal said, “When diagnosed in the early stages, 80 to 90 percent of head and neck cancer can be cured, but unfortunately, when diagnosed in 60 percent of cases, the disease is advanced. If diagnosed late, survival rates can be very low. Therefore, what do people, especially men over 40 years old? zamIt is very important for them to know that they will go to the doctor at the moment.” Mr. Hoşal listed the symptoms of the disease as follows: “Any of the symptoms of neck swelling, pain during swallowing, difficulty in swallowing, constant hoarseness, mouth sores, one-sided stuffy nose and/or bloody discharge from the nose, pain in the throat, face, jaw or ear, is present for three weeks or longer without apparent cause zamA doctor should be consulted without delay.”
Expressing that the COVID-19 pandemic process causes people to apply to the doctor less or delay the application, Prof. Dr. Şefik Hoşal said, “A new problem has been added in terms of diagnosis for this disease, which is usually caught later than it should be. That's why this year awareness week zamis more important than now. As an association, we are trying to reach more people both through the scanning program and through the social media channel. During the Head and Neck Cancer Awareness week, we launched the Instagram page of our Association. We have a campaign on social media that we run with the hashtag #basagelenasilir and with the support of various actors, announcers, radio programmers and voice actors. We've created an instagram filter that shows you minor glitches that might happen to you. By sharing this, we say that what happens is unbearable, #successful. We call on you as long as you are aware of the symptoms and have information about the disease.
Let's learn about risk factors
prof. Dr. Hosal, pointing to the data of the online awareness survey conducted in Turkey last year, said: “EHNS conducted an awareness survey in 5 European countries, including Turkey. 70% of respondents say they are not sure about the symptoms of the disease, and 36% say they have never heard of head and neck cancers. Laryngeal cancer is the most common type of cigarette smoking in Turkey. Other head and neck cancer types are: pharyngeal cancer, oral cavity cancer, lip cancer, salivary gland cancer, tongue cancer, sinus cancer. The most important causes of head and neck cancers are smoking and alcohol use and HPV, sexually transmitted human papilloma virus. The rate of head and neck cancer in men is two to three times higher than in women. You should know the risk factors and, if necessary, you should be examined by your doctor at the point you suspect.
