Rosacea, which manifests itself with redness on the face, but can often be confused with other skin diseases, can be triggered especially in the summer months. While the sun, various foods and beverages, environmental pollution and stress cause attacks, it is possible to control the disease with appropriate skin treatments performed under the supervision of a specialist. Rosacea (rose disease) is a chronic recurrent skin disease that affects the midline of the face, progresses with attacks and has different clinical types, and only affects the face. However, there are different diseases that cause redness and acne on the face. Among these ailments, egzama, demodicosis, cortisone rosacea, neurogenic rosacea, drug allergy, lupus and acne. The definitive distinction of these diseases can be made by a dermatologist.

Rosacea patients should avoid these foods and drinks.

The relationship of rosacea with food is well known. These foods are grouped as follows:

  • Histamine-rich foods (fermented/smoked/prepared foods, ripe cheese.)
  • Foods rich in niacin (liver, turkey, tuna-salmon, peanuts, etc.)
  • Capsaicin-containing foods (pepper types, hot sauces, etc.)
  • Food and products containing cinnamaldehyde (tomato, citrus, cinnamon, chocolate, etc.)
  • Any high-temperature food and drink can trigger rosacea.

In addition, the patient should be advised to avoid any food that is reported as a personal trigger. Alcohol increases attacks in rosacea patients, sauces containing alcohol and boza should also be avoided. It is known that coffee no longer aggravates rosacea, but extremely hot coffee and tea should not be drunk.

Rosacea patients should pay attention to daily skin care

Since the face is very sensitive, cream-based products specially developed for sensitive and reddened skin should be preferred. It describes signs of irritation such as redness, burning and stinging, especially with the products they use during active periods. Routine skin care is very important in patients. It is beneficial both in reducing the attacks and increasing the compliance with the treatments applied. Non-allergic dermocosmetic products developed for sensitive skin should be preferred to repair the deteriorated skin barrier.

Routine skin care includes the use of cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens and dermocosmetic products suitable for the skin.

First, the skin should be washed twice a day with cleansers that do not contain soap, do not dry the skin and have a moisturizing effect, and then gently wipe with soft cotton towels.

The face should be moistened 2 times a day. Humidifiers reduce water loss from the skin, repair the skin barrier, reduce irritation and make the patient feel better.

Appropriate sunscreen products should be chosen

To protect from sun rays, at least SPF 30, inorganic ultraviolet light filters such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, and sunscreens containing dimethicone should be preferred. Silicone-containing products are also useful in rosacea. Products must be fragrance-free. Patients should use sunscreen all year round. The selection of cosmetic products to be applied to the skin should be done very carefully. Avoid products that will irritate the skin. The product to be selected should be taken in a very small amount and applied to the skin, and should not be used if burning or stinging occurs within 72 hours.

Care should be taken with the cosmetic products used. Products with irritant ingredients such as menthol, alcohol, eucalyptus, clove oil can trigger rosacea. Soaping the face area, use of tonics and cleansers, use of unsuitable cosmetic agents and shaving care products also trigger rosacea. Rosacea patients should avoid peeling procedures such as chemical peeling, exfoliation, scrubbing, microdermabrasion and dermabrasion. However, botulinum toxin, mesotherapy, filling, PRP and laser applications can be made.

Enemy of hot rosacea

Rosacea is a disease that is highly affected by external factors, so it is very important to avoid triggering factors both in treatment and to prevent recurrence of attacks after treatment. The most important factor triggering rosacea is UV (sun) light. Skin lesions are exacerbated in the heat as the vessels expand and some inflammatory substances are secreted. All kinds of heat (sun, hot bath, sauna, spa, Turkish bath, SPA, hot pool etc. use, hair dryer use, ironing, food steam, hot steam from dishwasher, hot food and drinks, stove and similar radiant heaters, use of thermophores) should be avoided.

Rose disease is a disease triggered by many internal and external factors, and the triggering factors differ in each patient. Therefore, it is important to identify individual triggers. Patients are also advised to keep a diary on this topic. This method will enable patients to become more conscious of the triggering factors and to see their relationship with their diseases more clearly and to avoid them.

In this diary, the weather conditions, the food and beverages eaten, the activities performed, the cosmetic products applied to the face should be included and the severity of the disease that day should be recorded (mildly flaming, moderate, severe). The common causes of exacerbation should be reviewed by keeping this diary every day. This diary can be kept for a period of time until the culprit factors are found.
