It's Possible to Protect Your Skin Against Acne Caused by Covid-19 Masks!

While masks protect us from the virus during the pandemic process, they also cause many skin problems. Acne called “maskne” caused by the use of masks in hot and humid weather is one of these problems.

With the entry and spread of COVID-19 in our lives, wearing a protective face mask has become a part of our daily routine to avoid being affected by the epidemic. While masks protect us from the virus, they can also cause skin problems, especially in hot weather. The use of masks in hot and humid weather brings with it many problems on the skin due to acne, sweating, irritation and high humidity. It is possible to avoid these problems with a few preventive measures that can be taken.

Stating that the use of masks should not be abandoned to protect against COVID-19 despite the difficulties it creates, Near East University Vocational School Hair Care and Beauty Services Department Head Assist. Assoc. Dr. Yeşim Üstün Aksoy gave important tips to avoid the negative effects of masks.

Recommendations to avoid mask-related skin problems

Making a warning that applying make-up while wearing a mask creates a layer on the skin surface that remains closed and moist, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Yeşim Üstün Aksoy emphasized that this situation facilitates the formation of acne by causing clogging of the pores. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Aksoy said, “Especially in hot weather, with the increase in sweating, the masks trap the sweat on the skin and cause acne, rosacea, eg.zamA (seborrheic dermatitis) can cause skin disorders” while he says that the most common skin problem related to the use of masks is acne known as “maskne”. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Aksoy adds that the use of double masks increases the maskne problem by strengthening the moist and airless environment on the skin.

Stating that daily skin care and the use of sunscreen cream and moisturizer are among the leading measures to be taken against mask-related skin problems, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Yeşim Üstün Aksoy recommends using colored sunscreens instead of concealers such as foundation or powder.

Reminding that the masks used due to the pandemic do not protect from the sun, Assist. Assoc. Dr. For this reason, Aksoy emphasized that sunscreen cream should be applied while going out in the sun during the pandemic process, and a mask should be worn approximately one hour after applying to absorb the cream.

What should your daily skin care routine be like in summer?

Giving small and simple suggestions to protect our sun-affected skin, especially in the summer months, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Yeşim Üstün Aksoy said, “Our skin should be washed with a suitable cleansing gel every evening and then moistened with a moisturizing cream. When we get up in the morning, we should wash our face with clear water and apply our sunscreen cream.

Stating that spot and laser treatments should be avoided during the summer months, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Aksoy said that the peeling effect of spot treatments on the skin leaves the skin vulnerable to the sun, and this can make it even easier to spot.
