Nomophobia, which has started to be seen with the increase of digitalization, is becoming increasingly common, especially among young people. Stating that nomophobia is often seen with phone addiction, Specialist Psychologist Tuğçe R. Tuncel Dursun from Çakmak Erdem Hospital made statements on the subject.

Nomophobia, which is the short pronunciation of the English words no mobile phobia, is defined as the fear of being away from the mobile phone. Well, have you ever experienced such fear? Have you ever wondered how many times a day you look at your phone? According to studies, we look at our phone an average of 2617 times a day, and unfortunately, this number is much higher for those who are addicted to the phone. exp. Ps. Tuğçe R. Tuncel Dursun made the following statements about this increasingly widespread phobia: “Nomophobia is defined as the fear of being disconnected from the communication that people establish via mobile phones. It is among the specific phobias in the literature. With the use of mobile phones, dopamine release in the brain increases and with the increase in dopamine release, people may develop addiction to the phone. People with nomophobia have difficulty in focusing on their daily lives because they have fear, anxiety and thoughts about the blocking of their communication networks with their phones. Therefore, many failures can be observed in the academic and business life of these people.”

Stating that we need to review some of our behaviors to understand whether we have nomophobia or not, Dursun continued his words as follows: zamWe may suspect nomophobia if we spend a lot of time, worry about the phone running out of charge and take measures to prevent it from running out, (eg, carrying a charger or carrying a spare phone with us), trying to avoid environments where device use is prohibited or network problems are experienced, if we sleep with the phone and keep the phone on all the time. We recommend that people get support when this situation disrupts the functionality of their lives.”

PEOPLE SHOULD BE SURE TO GET SUPPORT IF THEY CAN'T OVERCOME THIS FOBI

Dursun, who recommends that people who cannot find a solution to nomophobia on their own, start the psychotherapy process when they feel ready, said the following about the therapy process: “To get rid of nomophobia, CBT, or cognitive behavioral therapy, is usually applied. The aim of the therapy is to change the thoughts that create the fears and anxieties of the people about the interruption of their communication by phone. During the therapy process, it is ensured that people are gradually exposed to reduce their communication on the phone. According to the researches, with the increase in the use of social media, the probability of having nomophobia increases in the following processes. For this reason, it is recommended that the person reduce the use of social media.
