Women's Fear of Urinary Incontinence

Yeni Yüzyıl University Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital, Department of Urology, Prof. Dr. Fatih Altunrende gave information about 'incontinence problems'.

Urinary incontinence can be defined as involuntary full or partial emptying of the urinary bladder. Although its incidence increases with advancing age, it can be seen at any age. While the most common cause of urinary incontinence in men is benign prostate enlargement, urinary incontinence can be seen in women due to difficult births, menopause, weakening of pelvic floor muscles and organ prolapse.

Urinary incontinence can be of different types.

Urinary incontinence can be seen in two different ways as urge incontinence, which can be defined as the inability to grow urine, and stress incontinence, which occurs in situations where intra-abdominal pressure increases such as coughing and laughing. In addition, mixed incontinence, in which these two types are seen together, is quite common. It is extremely important to determine the type and causes of urinary incontinence with examinations and tests to be performed before treatment is planned.

Especially in female patients, they may hide their urinary incontinence complaints by thinking that urinary incontinence is a natural result due to advanced age and there is no treatment. This situation can reduce the quality of life and prevent patients from social life. With the fear of urinary incontinence in the community, the situation of staying at home may occur.

There is a cure

Stating that it is possible to treat urinary incontinence according to the causes after the examination and tests, Prof. Dr. Altunrende; “Beginning with behavioral changes, there are successful treatment options such as medication and surgery. Our patients with urinary incontinence should definitely consult a specialist doctor. With the treatments we have applied in recent years, urinary incontinence is no longer fate.”

Bladder botox application

For patients who do not want to use drugs for a long time, botox can be applied to the urinary bladder with a short procedure. Stating that patients may not need to use drugs for 6 to 9 months after Botox application, Altunrende stated that the application may be a permanent solution for some patients.
