Obesity; It can cause cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, uterine, breast, prostate and colon cancers, high blood pressure, stroke, digestive system problems, respiratory tract problems, musculoskeletal problems, urogenital problems and psychosocial problems. Anadolu Medical Center General Surgery Specialist Assoc. Dr. Abdulcabbar Kartal made 10 important recommendations for those who had obesity surgery.
Healthy eating should be made a habit: One of the most important things to do after bariatric surgery is to make healthy eating a habit. For this reason, meals should never be skipped and should be tried to be fed as 3 main meals and 2-3 snacks.
Drink enough water: Attention should be paid to water consumption in order to prevent conditions such as fatigue and constipation that may occur after surgery. For this, at least 2-3 liters of water should be consumed per day. Since it is not possible to consume a large amount of water at once due to the shrinking stomach volume, it is best to drink water by dispersing it throughout the day. Remember that we do not recommend consuming water half an hour before and half an hour after meals.
Avoid caffeine and carbonated drinks: One of the most important problems after bariatric surgery is fluid loss, namely dehydration. It is known that tea and coffee drinks cause fluid loss and can cause conditions such as weakness, fatigue, headache. Since both fluid intake decreases and caffeinated beverages cause additional fluid loss in the postoperative period, we do not recommend consuming these beverages for at least 1 month in the postoperative period. As you lose weight and your metabolism returns to normal, these drinks can be started to be consumed in a controlled manner, provided that you do not reduce the amount of water you drink.
Avoid snacks: In the post-operative period, extra snacks should be avoided apart from the recommended meals and snacks. A snack consumed at a non-meal hour causes disruption of the meal in terms of both nutrition and satiety.
Blood sugar should be kept in balance: For this, we should especially stay away from simple carbohydrates. However, vegetables, legumes and fruits, which are complex carbohydrates, are good options to meet the carbohydrate requirement and their consumption is recommended. In addition to keeping blood sugar in balance, complex carbohydrates also regulate bowel movements and protect against constipation, as they are rich in fiber content.
Proteins should be emphasized in the diet: Protein is the most important nutritional source for post-surgery. It may be a little difficult to fulfill this need with the shrinking stomach volume after the surgery. Therefore, if you give priority to protein-containing foods at meals and you are not satisfied yet, eating other foods (vegetables, fruits, etc.) will be the best way to meet your protein needs.
Attention should be paid to the balance of vitamins and minerals: It is very important to control blood levels after surgery. Deficiency of Iron, B12 and B2 vitamins is very common. If necessary, this and other vitamin and mineral supplements should be used.
Attention should be paid to adequate and quality sleep: Another important reason for feeling tired after bariatric surgery is insomnia. Sleeping at least 7-8 hours a day and connecting it to a routine is very important for healthy weight loss.
Attention should be paid to exercise balance: One of the most important conditions of losing weight after bariatric surgery is to be active. Walking enough, including the day of surgery, will help you lose weight and protect yourself from embolism. We recommend that the operated patients take at least 5 thousand steps from the day they are discharged and increase this to at least 2 thousand steps within 4-10 weeks. We do not recommend doing heavy sports such as running, fitness, weight lifting for the first month.
You should continue to receive support from a dietitian and psychologist: Studies have shown that individuals who continue to support dieticians and psychologists for 2 years in the postoperative period lose more weight and maintain the ideal weight for a longer period of time.
