Stating that adenoids started to be seen when children leave their home environment and enter social environments such as nurseries and schools, Near East University Hospital Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Specialist Eda Tuna Yalçınozan said that this problem can be solved with a simple surgical intervention.

Adenoid is one of the most common problems in childhood. Adenoidal disease, which is called adenoid hypertrophy in the medical language, actually occurs when a tissue that is extremely important for the immune system in children grows more than necessary. Dr. Eda Tuna Yalçınozan says that the adenoid tissue is a lymphoid tissue mass located on the posterior-upper wall of the nasal cavity and this tissue has an important role in the development of immune system memory. “Adenoids is present in every child at birth, but it is small and does not cause problems because it has not encountered any pathogens before,” said Assist. Assoc. Dr. Eda Tuna Yalçınozan said that this tissue reaches its maximum size between the ages of 3 and 6 as a result of antigenic stimulation and then begins to regress, and the regression is completed until the age of 15 -16.

It is common when children meet social environments such as kindergarten.

Adenoid problem usually starts to show symptoms when children leave their home environment and enter social environments such as nurseries. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Eda Tuna Yalçınozan reminds that the upper respiratory tract is in constant contact with microorganisms during breathing. The frequency of adenoid enlargement increases in the nursery period, especially as a result of the children who go to kindergarten constantly infect each other. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Eda Tuna Yalçınozan said, “These lymphoid formations can enlarge and become hypertrophic due to reasons such as exposure to repeated exposures of microorganisms, allergies and smoking by the parents. Adenoid is a health problem that has an effect on the growth and development of children. These problems, which are experienced due to adenoids, are nasal congestion and related mouth breathing, upper respiratory tract resistance syndrome, snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, distraction and decrease in academic success, restlessness and irritability, incontinence, swallowing and speech disorders, decreased taste and smell, sinusitis, fluid collection in the middle ear, otitis media, decreased hearing, halitosis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, vocal cord inflammation, lung inflammation, abnormal facial and tooth development, growth and development retardation, pulmonary hypertension, cor. It can cause many health problems such as pulmonale. For these reasons, families should be alert, especially in children who have frequent infections, problems such as constant nasal congestion, snoring and sleeping with their mouth open. They should consider the possibility that their children may also have adenoid problem and apply to an otolaryngologist.

Discharged on the day of surgery

Stating that endoscopic examination methods are easier to apply today, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Eda Tuna Yalçınozan said that thanks to these examination methods, the diagnosis can be made correctly, however, radiological examinations are also required in cases where the symptoms and findings are not compatible. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Eda Tuna Yalçınozan continued as follows; “Sometimes, the adenoid tissue may enlarge due to infection and this infection may continue for weeks. This condition is called pharyngitis. Persistent nasal congestion or runny nose, post-nasal drip, sore throat, headache, earache and ear infections can also cause complaints such as cough. The treatment in adenoid infections is antibiotics and other auxiliary drugs in the first step; but if the child has started to have infections such as sinusitis or otitis very often, medical treatment will no longer work and breathing problems will continue with it. In such cases, adenoid tissue should be removed. This procedure is also called adenoidectomy (adenoid removal) surgery. Adenoidectomy surgery can be performed at any age with the correct diagnosis that fits the indications. Surgery is a procedure performed by an otolaryngologist under general anesthesia in hospitals or surgical centers. In fact, as long as no unexpected situation develops after the surgery, the patients can be discharged during the day. After a postoperative period of about 4-6 hours, patients can start to eat many things, provided that they are not hard and hot, and they can continue their normal lives the day after the surgery. “
